Frail by Design is an instrumental, post/prog-rock band from Madison, WI. Since forming in December of '03 during their high-school youth, they have played shows across the Midwest, sharing stages with such acts as The Appleseed Cast, Giants, Max Justus, and Weaver at the Loom, and have independently released two EPs. Their first, eponymous EP, a self-produced and recorded effort by the band, featured an extended line-up and a more traditional post-rock aesthetic. Their second, entitled "The Time Traveller," was recorded/mixed/mastered with the help of Matt Spransy, at the Magic Mansion in Oconomowoc, Wisconsin. "The Time Traveller," the first installment in a trilogy of concept albums, focuses on Thadeus Grimm, an inventor who transcends time and space in search of a way to redeem humanity from the apocalypse by means of time travel, but is pursued through the fourth dimension by The Four Horsemen, and aided by two mysterious beings, Kata and Ana. The album sheds some of Frail by Design's previous monotonic, post-rock tendencies in favor of more complex, yet concise arrangements, and a greater variance in tone and mood. The album was recorded intermittently from June '08 through September '09 and has now just been released for free download from this site.
