ORIGINALLY SPARKED AT LEGENDARY SILVERLAKE SPOT RUDOLPHOS BACK IN 2001 AS A WAY FOR MILES & A NEWLY ARRIVED DJ EGON OF STONES THROW TO SHARE THE RAW FUNK MUSIC CRAWLING OUT THEIR CRATES WITH FOLKS IN L.A.SOON AFTER MILES & ORIGINAL SOLE CREW HAD TO MOVE THE PARTY & FOUND AN ODD BUT HAPPY HOME AT A FRESH OUT THE BOX STAR SHOES BAR IN THE CAHUENGA CORRIDOR.

THEY BROUGHT ALL THE LATE 60'S/70'S FUNKY SOUL THEY HAD WITH THEM AND THEN SOME WITH EGON EVENTUALLY BRANCHING OUT INTO WORLD BEAT PSYCHEDELIA.THE NIGHT TRULY BECAME THE PLACE WHERE YOU WOULD HEAR SOUNDS NOT FOUND IN ANY OTHER PART OF THE CITY AND MANY TIMES THEY WOULD BE THE FIRST TIME EVER BEING PLAYED IN L.A.

THE NIGHT WAS ALSO THE UNOFFICIAL & UNANNOUNCED HOME FOR VETERAN LOCAL DJ CUT CHEMIST.ALSO CREATED AN OUTLET FOR GUEST DJS LOCAL AND AROUND THE GLOBE TO COME THROUGH AND GET OFF THE TRACKS THAT THEY MIGHT NOT HAVE HAD THE CHANCE AT OTHER LA SPOTS BEFORE.GUEST DJS INCLUDED DJ MURO, KEB DARGE,ODUB, QUANTIC,CHAIRMAN MAO, DJ SHADOW & ANDY VOTEL.

IN 2008 FOLLOWING THE REGRETTABLE CLOSING OF STAR SHOES FUNKY SOLE FOUND A TEMPORARY HOME AT JIMMYS LOUNGE ALONG WITH A NEW ADDITION TO THE FUNKY SOLE FAMILY BY DJ CLIFTON AKA SOFT TOUCH!WE HAD A DECENT RUN AT JIMMYS BUT IT WAS INEVITABLE IT WOULD MOVE DUE TO TYPICAL HOLLYWOOD CHEESE FACTORS.DJ EGON UNFORTUNETELLY WILL NOT BE A REGULAR RESIDENT AT THE NEW FUNKY SOLE ECHO SIDE DUE TO HIS TRAVEL SCHEDULE.

2009 WILL BE THE CHANCE FOR THE EASTSIDE TO GET THE NATURAL RAW UNCUT BROUGHT TO THEIR WOODS WITHOUT ANY WORRIES ABOUT VALET PARKING OR BRIDGE & TUNNEL TRAFFIC TO GET IN THE WAY OF THEIR FUNKY SOLES

MORE FUNKY SOLE HISTORY!

7 years ago L.A was crying for some real deal funky soul sounds to dance to. Music Man Miles & Egon started a party called "At the Soul Inn" around the Silverlake area. Some good nites but ultimately they had to ramble down the road to Star Shoes where they were welcomed by bar owner Johnny Nixon to bring the ruckus on the dance floor.

Music Miles Miles first got into funk and soul music listening to hip hop then discovered the originals by hearing DJ's like Cut Chemist, Marvski and Mix Master Wolf, who were all busy keeping the original Bronx B-Boy break flavor alive and well in early 90's Los Angeles. Miles had been making beats around the same time for MC T-Love, though he did not DJ. He had a modest record collection but has in recent years had to enter a 12-inch 12-step program.

By 1996, Miles would start the Breakestra (house band for the Breaks Club)-playing out the funk fantasy of making the live band the DJ at the party. Later he would start Rootdown with former Breakestra and phantasm member Carlos Guaico of the Rebirth, where he eventually started buying and spinning records.

Egon started DJing 15 years ago in Connecticut as a B-Boy beat fanatic and later went to school out in Nashville where he could be close the funky soul trail from the midwest down to the south where proceeded to put in work travelling the country in between classes- unearthing many of the records ya hear at funky sole. Some of these records had never been played outside the city or town where he found them. Working with Stones Throw and Now Again Records, Egon would later release music from artists old recordings for the first time ever such as The Brothers 7 and L.A Carnival.

After Nashville, Egon moved out to L.A to help run Stones Throw Records with Peanut Butter Wolf. Egon had written an article featuring Breakestra and subsequently met Miles via phone interview. At that time Miles was finishing the Breakestra's Live Mix Part 2. Egon then brought a small version of Breakestra for his annual Ultimate Breaks & Beats party which included DJ Short Kut, DJ Clever, Signify and Galt Mcdermot, as well as drumming legend Bernard Purdie and bass player Wilbur Bascomb of James Brown's "Funky President" fame. Egon continues to unearth unreleased material from across the country which can be heard regularly at Funky Sole.

DJ CLIFTON AKA SOFT TOUCH has been puttin funky soul down with us since the star shoes days as an occassional guest but now is a full time resident.He's a veteran of the eastside/hollywood L.A. music community as bass player for the (mojo filters) and also a guitarist singer/songwriter on his own.A dedicated lover historian/sage of most western popular & underground music forms out there, he always digs deeper in his funk selection but always moving the crowd.Every friday he djs an indie rock party called underground @ echo and on tuesdays a quality musical smorgasbord called Sonic @ beauty bar. He is also the cleanest outfitted cat in town! We're grateful to all the heads that support Funky Sole and to the guest DJs Quantic,Keb Darge, DJ Shadow, Chairman Mao, Jeremy Sole, Andy Votel,Mahssa, J ROCC, Renato, Boss Harmz, Greg Belson, Mahssa, Tom Noble, Skeme Richards, Dennis Owens, Peanut Butter Wolf, DJ Day, Phoreyz, Smite, Small Change,Danny Holloway, Citizen Kane and of course Cut Chemist- our usual funkspekt!
