Broadway and West End star John Owen Jones was recently hailed by the New York Post as the best Jean Valjean since Colm Wilkinson. As well as starring in “Les Misérables” in both the West End and on Broadway he has also appeared as ‘The Phantom’ in “The Phantom of the Opera” at Her Majesty’s Theatre. Earl Carpenter who is currently playing ‘Javert’ in the West End production of “Les Misérables” has also starred as ‘The Phantom’ in West End as well as the starring role of ‘Darryl Van Horne’ in “The Witches of Eastwick” at the Prince of Wales Theatre. Gareth Gates needs no introduction. A multi million selling popstar who still has the 2nd best selling single this decade. More recently he has played the title role of ‘Joseph’ in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat” at the West End’s Adelphi Theatre and was a semi finalist in ‘Dancing on Ice’ 2008.
Seen by over 56 million people worldwide in 42 countries and in 21 languages, “LES MISÉRABLES” is undisputedly one of the world’s most popular musicals ever written, with new productions continually opening around the globe. There have been 34 cast recordings of “LES MISÉRABLES”, including the multi-platinum London cast recording and the Grammy Award-winning Broadway cast and complete symphonic albums. The video of the 10th Anniversary Royal Albert Hall Gala Concert has sold nearly two million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling musical videos ever in the UK. There are over 2,000 productions of the Les Misérables School’s Edition scheduled or being performed by over 100,000 school children in the UK, US and Australia, making it the most successful musical ever produced in schools.
Cameron Mackintosh’s production of “LES MISÉRABLES” is written by Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg and is based on the novel by Victor Hugo. It has music by Claude-Michel Schönberg, lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer and original French text by Alain Boublil and Jean-Marc Natel and additional material by James Fenton. Head chorister at Bradford Cathedral by the age of eleven, singing for the Queen at 13; Gareth Gates scorched a path to the final of the first ever Pop Idol back in 2002. A debut number one single and album followed, followed by a string of top 5 singles, three further number ones, sold out arena tours and to date a staggering 3.5 million record sales.
After taking some well-earned time out, Gareth appeared back on our TV screens in a documentary called Whatever Happened to Gareth Gates? The documentary followed Gareth’s experiences in and out of the music industry and his fight to rid himself of his serious speech impediment. He went on to not only do just that, but also to qualify as a McGuire Programme speech coach and instructor to help others with stammers such as his own. He is the youngest UK person to qualify as a speech coach with the programme. With a new found confidence, Gareth took part in his first TV interview since combating his stammer on Tonight With Jonathan Ross.
2008 has kept Gareth very busy. His successful appearance on ITV1's Dancing On Ice saw him subsequently taking part in the Dancing On Ice Tour performing in arenas around the UK, he has been seen kicking a ball for the UNICEF televised fundraising event Soccer Aid 2008 (playing for the winning England team), he performed in A Spoonful of Stiles & Drewe (a charity gala show celebrating 25 years of the writing partnership between George Stiles & Anthony Drewe where he co-headlined an exclusive preview of material from Soho Cinders, the latest show by the successful duo) and he even found the time to marry long term girlfriend Suzanne Mole in July this year (they have just announced that they are now expecting their first child early next year)!
After an exciting and eventful year Gareth is again expanding his horizons and seeing out 2008 in pantomime (oh no he isn’t…. oh yes he is…). Starring in Cinderella as the handsome Prince Charming alongside Gavin and Stacey’s Joanna Page and impressionist, comedian and actor Alistair McGowan, this flagship show promises to see in 2009 with a bang and the start of a new year that promises even more from this amazing talent.
