California-based singer/songwriter Geoff Baker was born in Los Angeles and raised all over the place. At the age of 14, he borrowed a guitar and never really gave it back. He learned to play along with the records he loved in high school: The Jesus and Mary Chain, the Pixies, Joy Division, Wire. When he later immersed himself in more traditional folk music by the likes of Mississippi John Hurt, Woody Guthrie, Nick Drake, and Bob Dylan, he began trying to blend his various loves: furious finger-picking, folk urgency, post-punk energy. He likes his
dreams impossible, his drinks neat, his tunes a little bit catchy, and
his lyrics a little bit poisonous.
Geoff released the EP, Patriot
Acts, a collection of angry political songs, in 2004. Before the year was done, he had also finished the full-length debut album, Know the Rain Here. Time Out (London) hailed Patriot
Acts' tunes as "a fine line in protest song," and reviewers of Know the Rain Here praised its "flawless songwriting" and "emotional punch."
A 5-song EP, Adding Up the Everything We Lost, was released in late December of 2008, into the gaping maw of a fierce economic downturn, because what people really need when unemployment is spiking is bittersweet alt folk music. Geoff returned to the UK, Denmark, Holland, and Ireland for live shows in the summer of 2009 and is currently finishing the second full-length album, titled Where Are You Now?, which should appear in early 2010.
