My name is George H Johnson Jr. I was born in 1948 and grew up in Washington, D.C., attending city public schools. Church was a big influence in my life from an early age.
I started teaching myself guitar when I was 17. In 1968, I started working as a music teacher at H.D. Cooke Elementary School in the city. That same year, I formed a R&B group called The Rotations Band & Show. We were soon signed to a recording contract after winning first place in the Washington D.C. Show Mobile. Unfortunately, the band was short-lived, but I will always have fond memories of those days. I continue to work as a musician in the D.C. area, playing such clubs as the Showboat Lounge in Adams Morgan and the Oasis in Mt Pleasant.
I started a ministry, (PEACE GOSPEL MUSIC MINISTRY INC), (501) (3), an I.R.S. non-profit organization, after arranging and leading The Peace Gospel Singers. The group performed in many churches in and outside of the Washington area. We won a second place gospel certificate from Woodson Senior High School in 1980. I have performed at a number of colleges including Howard University, American University, The University of Maryland-- Baltimore County, The University of the District of Columbia, George Washington University and Cede Crest College in Allentown, Pennsylvania. I now reside in Maryland. I currently work as a musician at the Potbelly Family Restaurants, where I sing and play the stuff I love -- Doo Wop, Rock and good old Soul and R&B. In addition to Potbelly and various clubs and colleges, I also performed at a YMCA open house in September 2004, the grand opening for a Krispy Kreme Doughnuts in Dupont Circle in August 2004, and more recently for the Downtown D.C. Organization and at a Christmas party for the Korman Communities, both in December 2005.

Regina Coates, the Membership Coordinator for the YMCA National Capital in Washington, DC, wrote in a letter:
"Last year, on several occasions we invited Mr. Georgie 'Guitar' Porgie to perform during our membership social events. Mr. Porgie's performances were outstanding and enjoyable. Our members enjoyed every selection. He was given some great reviews and praise....YMCA National Capital looks forward to doing business with Mr. Porgie in the future."
Andrew Melnick remarked in an email:
"I was recently at Potbelly in DC for lunch...I looked up to see Georgie Guitar Porgie jammin on a loft. His singing was very enjoyable and made my lunch a great experience...Hope to hear him play again in the future."

George not only gives Steve Cropper a run for his money on the guitar, but to say that he is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the history of the music he plays is quite an understatement. Whether it be Doo Wop, Motown, Stax, The Curtis Mayfield Chicago Sound, Gamble & Huff or some down home funk or blues, this man is an encyclopedia! Keep on doing your thing.
