You might say Gina Chavez needs a guitar as much as it needs her.
Gina’s percussive Ani-like guitar playing pounds the backbeat for soaring, Joni-like vocals that make for a rare onstage relationship; one that developed just in the nick of time.
As a senior in high school, Gina found herself in a starring musical role with all eyes upon her and not a line to her memory. The episode left her sobbing in the bathroom with little hope of setting foot on stage again…until she found her dad’s 1954 Martin guitar.
With six strings and a well-trained ear, Gina set to learning the basics, which she bolted through in months and began writing songs of fear, faith, heartache and hope. Those songs now color her debut album, Hanging Spoons, and have landed Gina in international competitions, among Austin’s finest musicians on a citywide compilation album, The Sound is Brown, and onstage in venues across the nation.
Today Gina prefers the stage. There, the guitar is more than melody, harmony, movement or sound. It’s a close friend. A reason to sing. A happy heart for an unsettled soul. With a mic at the ready and a guitar in her hands, Gina plucks and pounds to the beat of a new strum where traditional folk meets it match.
Often accompanied by Austin’s finest – (Roel Martinez - mandolin/guitar, Kenneth Null - bass, Sammy Foster - drums) – Gina’s live performance takes the girl-with-a-guitar scene to a place where blues, Latin, jazz and bluegrass find a strong, soothing and unforgettable new voice.
