Writing, poetry, publishing. Live music and arts events in Southern California.
Music
David Bowie and Iggy Pop. Pretty much anything on the fringes of any genre. Musicians who play hard rock like it was free form jazz -- Banyan, Instagon, Nels Cline, Sonic Youth, Frank Zappa. Little known bands I really love -- Walkabouts, Clear, Superman Loses the Girl, Donovan's Brain.
Movies
Performance. Dr. Strangelove. Something Wild. Gimme Shelter.
Television
Simpsons. West Wing. The news. That's about it.
Books
Spoken Word Revolution. Great Gatsby. Day of the Locust. Gravity's Rainbow.
Self-published chapbooks by countless awesome poets nobody knows about (yet).
About me: I have been writing and performing poetry all over Southern California (and ocassionally beyond) for over 15 years now. My first full length book of poetry, Cows on the Freeway, was published in 2000. I also have five chapbooks published.
From 1994 - 1998, I edited and published Next... Magazine, a monthly poetry newsmagazine for SoCal.
Before that, I ran Orange Ocean Press, which published a handful of poetry anthologies and books by SoCal poets. I recently republished our first book, Paper Shredders, an anthology of poems and short stories about surfing. It is available through all major booksellers.
From 2001 - 2004 I performed my poetry with my band, Murray, which included Lob from Instagon, Mike Weintraub, Dennis Lansing and Sean Campeau. Recordings are available.
I currently host a monthly poetry show, in coordination with The Prime Spot Radio, on kbeach.org. It is usually the first Friday of the month, at 10 pm, although things are on hiatus right now for the holidays. We will hopefully be back on the air early next year.
Who I'd like to meet: Other poets, writers, musicians and artists of all stripes.
so you stand in the middle of the street, facing north, straddling the yellow line, pick your tree, the one with the chattering where the night birds all gawk -
aim. a big flimsy branch, swaying once you fire, birds screaming loudly and flying away, some seem confused and circle just above the tree, their chatter is now frantic -
bam-bam, you fire twice more, this time something thuds to the ground, a dead one you hope (there's been such little sleep lately), then stirring from across the street, a sudden porch light gleam, and you're hiding behind a dented Civic, some protective father searching all around: "who's there, what was that?"
and you respond while crouching, in your quiet gay way: "the end of the night birds, and their constant slap chatter."
Hey, have you heard of this site: http://www.smartishpace.com/? I ran across it and thought of you. Hope you're well... The sky is bright blue and cloudless here in NYC... About time!

Phantom Lips is an emerging Southern California publication. We're looking for quirky, heartfelt, funny, cutting, and otherwise vibrant writings, drawings, photographs and constructions. You know that experimental story you were too afraid to take to workshop, or the cartoons you shoved in your drawer for fear of being called a weirdo? Well, take them out and send them our way! Phantom Lips is the magazine where misfits fit in.
Each installment of Phantom Lips will be a celebration of and testament to humanity's inherent creativity, and our love of – and need for – expression and connection.
DEADLINE FOR ISSUE #1: Saturday, March 30th (This is just for the first issue, though. Keep submitting!)
