Sounds LikeBIO: Adam Gnade's (guh nah dee) work is released as a series of books and records that share characters and themes; the fiction writing continuing plot-lines left open by the songs, and vice versa. Like the books, the lyrics in the songs come from prose writing (not poetry or spoken word) and are delivered in a style Adam calls "talking-songs," (which he says is an attempt to create a new genre of folk music that "sounds and feels like America" by combining talked vocals with field recordings and elements of west coast noise and older folk and country musics. The entire span of the work is umbrella'd under the name "We Live Nowhere and Know No One.") According to Adam, he's "tried to keep the books and the songs separate in the past but it didn't work. The only way I could pull off doing both was to integrate them as much as possible; immerse the songs in the books and the books in the songs." (One reviewer noted that, in the process, it has "created its own universe" which Adam says "sounds like bullshit.") Adam is currently living on the west coast of America and has an obsessive fanaticism for 40s, country music, noise cassette tapes, historical fiction, swimming in rivers, and the Foxfire books. His favorite band is Neutral Milk Hotel and his favorite book is To Kill a Mockingbird. -- Punch Drunk Tapes bio

ORDERING INFO: ADAM GNADE CATALOG

***$10 ORDER THE WILD HOMESICK CD A junkyard of minimalistic deconstructed Americana, Adam Gnade's new record, The Wild Homesick, is a strange, warm, troubled summer record full of doom and affirmations. It's water moccasins and honeylocust trees, motel swimming pools and fruit bats in the dusk, allusions to suburbs, ranch houses, trailerparks, and debt. Says Adam, "The Wild Homesick is the story of a group of people who are stuck. They're stuck for a variety of reasons, stuck in the places they live, stuck in lives they hate, incapacitated by debt; whatever it is, they're stuck and they're terrified." He continues, "Structurally, I've never done a record like this. It's 10 songs divided into four suites of music over the course of less than 20 minutes. Tiny 30 second-long songs packed with music up against uncharacteristically long ones with barely any backing but a little xylophone. Lots of slide guitar and banjo and lots of lyrics. More lyrics than past records. I think I'm finally hitting closer to what I wanted 'talking-songs' to be in the first place." Released by Punch Drunk Records, The Wild Homesick is the first in a series of four seasonal records. This, the summer record, takes place in Texas. ***$10 ORDER ISLAND'S ISLANDS CASSETTE Limited-edition run of 100 cassettes. Says Adam, "Each version will be recorded directly into my recorder onto that particular tape itself and each will feature different songs... new ones, covers, noise collages, revamps on old ones, whatever feels right at the time." PAYPAL $10 TO ADAMGNADE@HOTMAIL.COM OR CLICK HERE TO ORDER WITH PAYPAL, DEBIT OR CREDIT CARDS

***$16 ORDER HYMN CALIFORNIA DEBUT NOVEL "Hymn California moves--and by 'moves' I mean it is a book of motion, of MOVEMENT. It takes you from southern swamps to balconies in Brooklyn to Portland porches and back again--with a fluid, even pace. It is a road novel, an adventure book, a work of verbs and action. If the characters seem lost or restless, it's not because they're misguided wanderers or seekers, it's because there is medicine in leaving hard times behind you. It's because there is joy in the tires and highways of America. Gnade's book is about America and the road, but, more importantly, it's about PEOPLE, about their stories, and about the love they have for each other. Gnade is a damn good storyteller, and, not only that, he has some damn good stories." --Bart Schaneman PAYPAL $16 TO ADAMGNADE@HOTMAIL.COM OR CLICK HERE TO ORDER WITH PAYPAL, DEBIT OR CREDIT CARDS

***$5 ORDER THE DARKNESS TO THE WEST MINI-NOVEL "I'm not sure how he does it but but Mr. Gnade has managed to write another fantastic tale of everyday life and this time it's in the form of his novella called The Darkness To The West. It's basically a 60-page short story which Adam describes as 'adventure stories all linked together to detail one strange lost summer in America.' I couldn't put it better myself." --Oliver Primus, thefourohfive.com PAYPAL $5 TO ADAMGNADE@HOTMAIL.COM OR CLICK HERE TO ORDER WITH PAYPAL, CREDIT, DEBIT

***$10 ORDER RUN HIDE RETREAT SURRENDER DEBUT FULL-LENGTH CD "Whether it's just Adam and an acoustic guitar or a full basement orchestra beating and stomping on every instrument they can find, Run is an evocative experience, not just for the sounds but for the scents and tastes and sensations it invokes: the smell of rotting horseshoe crabs on an empty Florida beach; the drone of cicadas on dark country roads; the cry of bald tires threatening to blow on the New Jersey Turnpike. It is a record heavy with humid, festering decay, and the displaced feeling of a generation stopped dead in its tracks" --Jamey Bainer. PAYPAL $10 TO ADAMGNADE@HOTMAIL.COM OR CLICK HERE TO ORDER WITH PAYPAL, DEBIT, OR CREDIT CARDS

***$8 ORDER THE ADAM GNADE & YOUTHMOVIES RECORD
"Ideas and images cycle back, flashing brief visions of haunted wilderness, rising seas, decadent youth, faith healers, urban decay, and midnight carnivals in torch-lit clearings" --Try Harder Records bio. CLICK HERE TO ORDER WITH PAYPAL, DEBIT, OR CREDIT CARDS

Why did you decide to start this?
Music without actually singing.

The whole telling a story thing, I find it very intriguing.

But still, is there a reason why you decided to portray your music in this way? Can you not sing or something.

Get back to me !
