Devin Hoff (Nels Cline Singers, Plays Monk) and Ches Smith (Trevor Dunn's Trio-Convulsant, Marc Ribot's Ceramic Dog, Secret Chiefs 3) formed the duo Good for Cows in Oakland, CA in 1999 when no one else would show up for band practice. They have since released three full-length CDs with an emphasis on original tunes and improvisation: Good for Cows (2001, Evander Music), Less Than or Equal to (2003, Free Porcupine Society), Bebop Fantasy (2004, Asian Man Records) and 10th Anniversary Concert (2008, Bleeding Ear/DIY).
