  • Bio

Rachel Elliott started goose in 2009 as a sometimes solo, sometimes quintet arrangement with fellow Coal Choir musicians Melanie Benard, Ruth Ainsworth, Kate Forrest, and Arwen Flemming. Inspired by the Coal Choir's folky-choral-drone, Elliott sought to create a sound expressive of the emotional turmoil she recognized in liminal natural spaces: "The best parts of a city are the natural areas that have been simply left alone and not developed. These are fraught spaces - particularly dangerous spaces for a lone woman to dwell in. But that is exactly what I want to do! And its what other displaced animals want to do to." The name 'goose' comes from the Canada Goose, ubiquitous to the waterways of Southwestern Ontario where Elliott grew up, and a bird always under suspicion. Its a migratory bird both eerie and silly, qualities which characterize her music as well. By 2010 the group settled into a duo consisting of Elliott and Melanie Benard. Together they performed small acoustic shows around town but soon expanded again to include Laura Schultz, Christine Agozzino, Amber Phelps Bondaroff, and Jeremiah Riehl. It was in approximately this configuration that goose recorded their first full length album entitled The Fence Around My Grave.
