After receiving a BA in Film and Psychology from Emerson College in 2002, and a certificate in screenwriting from the same school in 2003, Solet went to work collaborating on a feature length script with his long time mentor, Eli Roth(Cabin Fever, Hostel), while continuing to write and direct his own material.
Solet’s 2005 short, Means to an End, was awarded, “Best Short Horror Film” from the genre’s number one authority, “Fangoria Magazine,” receiving distribution on Fangoria’s prestigious “Blood Drive 2” DVD. Means to an End also won “Best Short Film” and the “Audience Choice Award” at the 2005 Rhode Island International Horror Festival, and “Best Extreme Horror Film” at the 2005 Dragon Con International Film Festival. Solet’s next short film, Grace, screened at dozens of festivals, won “Best Short Film” at the 2006 Rhode Island Horror Festival, the “Peer’s Choice Award” at Dragon Con, 2006, and became the first independent film to screen on Fangoria TV.
Solet has received equal praise for his work as a screenwriter. His body-horror script, Repeater, came in Second Place in Hollywood’s First Glance Film Festival, was a Quarter Finalist in the 2006 Screenwriting Expo, and a Finalist in New York’s VisionFest 2006 Screenwriting Contest. His feature length thriller Heartland won Third Place at VisionFest 2005, was a Quarter Finalist in the 2005 Horror Screenplay Contest, finished in the top 25% at the 2006 Screenwriting Expo, and was a Quarter Finalist at the 2006 American Screenwriter’s Association Contest.
Editor of “Fangoria Magazine,” Tony Timpone, has called Solet, “A horror Talent to watch,” “Rue Morgue Magazine” has said, “Solet is undoubtedly destined to become a household name in the genre,” and Eli Roth has said Solet’s work, “Makes Cabin Fever look like a Disney movie….”
In May, 2008, Paul wrapped production on the feature length version of Grace, from which his much-lauded short film was distilled. Since its premiere at Sundance 2009, where two men in the audience passed out from the intensity of the film, Grace has played at festivals all over the world, including SXSW, Brussels, and Gerardmer, where it won the prestigeous Prix du Jury. It will play another 6 major international film festivals over the next two months, and many more in the months to follow.
Solet is known by his peers, producers, cast and crew as the most prepared director they have ever seen. This preparation, combined with his passion for his craft, allowed him to shoot Grace’s 192 scenes in 17 nine and a half hour days.
Solet works and lives - and lives to work - in Los Angeles, CA, ever determined to do his part in raising the bar in today’s genre cinema. And he writes his own biographies in the third person.
"Solet is part of the new breed of intellectual horror that never skimps on the blood and guts.” - Eli Roth, HOSTEL
"Solet is undoubtedly destined to become a household name in the genre." - RUE MORGUE MAGAZINE
"The new breed of horror. Don't let Solet out of your sights." - Bob Clark, DEAD OF NIGHT, PORKY'S, BLACK CHRISTMAS
"Paul Solet is a horror talent to watch." – Tony Timpone, Editor in Chief, FANGORIA MAGAZINE
I saw "Grace" tonight and I loved it! Paul, you have now ascended to Horror Godhood! Your movie was both riveting and subtle in all the right places, Man! I can't believe that was a feature debut! No reviews have caught two references I noticed, so I want to be the one to point them out! 1) You do a little homage to the discomfort of bizarre medical instruments from"Dead Ringers," when the doctor uses that freaky old-style breast pump! (that was the queasiest scene for me) 2) When Jordan drains blood from her victim, she seems to use the Gemini Killer's technique from "Exorcist III." Am I right? So many great moments in "Grace" I'll have to e-mail you after I've had some sleep!
Thanks for the add here too... "Grace" was unnerving, but I told you that already.. Now - I'm telling all of myspace..
Being a Parent. "Grace" left me squirming in my seat, clenching my teeth.. And, phoning my son when the movie let out.. =)
I know that audiences sometimes grasp only what hits closest to home, or take from it what they put into it.. But, for me.. I really enjoyed the experience.. despite, being all too familiar with the subject matter....
Just making the rounds to all of For Love & Stacie's friends here on MySpace letting you know that the full movie is now online in full for free. Hope you love it and and really hope you'll help us out by spreading it around! Thanks so much!
