Gretchen Christopher's Interests
|
| General | Staying fit and healthy, values intact, heart full of love; so I can continue communicating through the arts: writing, illustrating, dancing, choreographing, singing, songwriting, recording, producing, sharing with the world, the best that I can give.
(See www.GretchenChristopher.com ) | | Music | Concept Album, Gretchen's SWEET SIXTEEN! (SUITE 16) - 16 sweet, soulful, insightful, self-penned songs (including #1 Hit "Come Softly To Me" and "Graduation's Here") - the soundtrack of our lives. (To hear song samples, just go to http://www.TheFleetwoods.com/sweet16CD.html and scroll down.) Billboard Hits by Gretchen Christopher and The Fleetwoods: No. 1 Gold Records, million sellers "Come Softly To Me" and "Mr. Blue"; Top 10 "Tragedy"; Top 30 "Runaraound" and "Outside My Window"; Top 40 "(He's) The Great Impostor", "Graduation's Here", "Goodnight My Love","Lovers By Night, Strangers By Day"; Hot 100 "You Mean Everything To Me" and "The Last One To Know"
For listing of our 15 albums and 7 CDs, see www.TheFleetwoods.com/albums.html | | Movies | My voice, songs, and Fleetwoods hits are heard on the soundtracks of movies: "28 Days", "Stand By Me", "Crossing Delancey", "Clean and Sober", "National Lampoon's Vacation", "Diner", "American Graffiti", "American Hot Wax", "Return To Macon County", and so many more I can't remember! ( They are not even all listed at
http://www.thefleetwoods.com/screenwork.html ) | | Television | Of all the TV shows, I most enjoyed doing "The Dick Clark Show", "American Bandstand" and, because they were also such a great part of television and music history, "The Ed Sullivan Show" and "The Alan Freed Show". I would love to appear on "Oprah" and many of the talk shows that I was considered too young for, when we had our first #1 Hits and Gold Records as teenagers. Now, I'm a teenager again, times have changed, youth is in! (:o) | | Books | I'm sometimes embarrassed that, when I'm asked to write my background (even the CD liner notes), it turns into a book! (And I squelch it.) Once my CD is launched, I really must allow myself to let the writing flow. In the meantime, my interviews have provided material for many books by other people, including LIBERTY RECORDS by Michael "Doc Rock" Kelly (advertised for nearly a thousand dollars on eBay, I'm told), and magazines such as his article in DISCOVERIES, June 2006, "The Fleetwoods: Inventors of Soft Rock"; and Jerry Osborne's ASK MR. MUSIC, July 2006 (syndicated in newspapers thoughout the U.S. and online for 40 million readers, I'm told); and DISCOVERIES, August 2006, DiscMail, "The Fleetwoods and Gretchen Christopher" by Stephen Appell, with an article in the works. I appreciate the fine writing of these folks and their dedication to accuracy, inspired by their love of the music and honor in their own art. | | Heroes | My beautiful mother, Helen Gray Christopher, who wrote an autbiography at age 87, DOUBLE ENTRY, proving it's never too late. (She's my inspiration in so many ways.) My father, Ian Christopher (1900 to 1997), whose voracious reading and research gave him some knowledge of almost any topic, and whose vast vocabulary, yachting whites and jaunty cap were just part of the charm that captured my mother. Dad taught us principles of good health, nutrition, natural foods and excercise (including the art of sailing and providing us with a home on the waterfront and 10 acres for raising fresh food from our own livestock, orchards and gardens). And he lived to be almost 97! Both my parents for their love of the arts, making music daily, from which I learned (seemingly by osmosis) to arrange harmony at age five, sing from memory 250 jazz standards by the time I was a teenager, and make my own life and living in the arts. Dad was a member of the Olympia Symphony Orchestra for 33 years, first playing flute, then cello, for the love of making the music. Sounds of these instruments sweeten my CD, which is parenthetically titled (SUITE 16), a salute to the chamber music on which I was raised. My parents and their friends performed classical string quartets and jam sessions of jazz, in our living room, while my sister and I entertained dinner guests by choreographing and lipsynching (Fred Astaire and Jane Powell/ROYAL WEDDING) "How Could You Beleive Me When I Said I Love You When You Know I've Been A Liar All My Life." How privileged we were to grow up in such a household. In 2003, we came together to see Mom honored as recipient of South Sound's Salute To The Arts Award, recognizing, among her many accomplishments, that she co-founded Olympia Little Theatre, Olympia Junior Programs, and, with years of volunteer work, was greatly instrumental in bringing to reality the building of the Washington Center For The Performing Arts. From California, my sister Sonja Christopher (yes, the first TV SURVIVOR voted off the island :o), our older brother Jim Christopher (North American Laser sail racing champion) joined us in Olympia with our younger brother Wm. Ian Christopher (local sail racing champion), and, for a week in July 2006, we again celebrated Mom, Helen Gray Christopher, vital and beautiful, on her 97th birthday! With enduring admiration and love for Dad and for Mom, who, to my great good fortune, gave birth to me on February 29th, I dedicate my first solo CD, the autobiographical concept album, Gretchen's SWEET SIXTEEN! (SUITE 16). |

About me:
After having 11 Billboard hit singles and 15 albums as The Fleetwoods (founder, female lead Vocalist, Arranger and Songwriter), I've finally written and recorded my first SOLO CD: Gretchen's SWEET SIXTEEN! (SUITE 16) - 16 sweet, soulful, insightful, self-penned songs (including #1 Hit "Come Softly To Me" and "Graduation's Here" - plus "Time of Love", "Blues Go Away" and a dozen more, covering six decades) - the soundtrack of our lives. (To hear song samples, just go to http://www.TheFleetwoods.com/sweet16CD.html and scroll down.) The songs tell a story that would be a natural for a movie musical or Broadway show (and I was thrilled to receive a Scriptwriter Showcase scholarship in April, 2006): When I was 16, he was 18, the older man in my life. We fell in love for the very first time. Who knew it would last all his life? I went my way, pursued all my dreams, reached the unreachable star; left him behind, never looked back, never dreamed he still loved from afar. It was lonely at the top. External success is not necessarily internal success. I wrestled with deep depression and finally found a new point of view, a new attitude. Now, after nearly four decades apart, my first love and I are together again! And I'm 16 again (a Leap Year baby, born February 29th! :o)

Who I'd like to meet:
Hosts on all the major talk shows! Fans who've loved our music in the movies listed below and on radio and who long to hear such beautiful sounds again. And music lovers who are younger and feel they missed out on the Golden Era of Music and wish they could be a part of it. Now, you can. With brand new songs and classics, I want to share with the world the very best I have to offer. And I so look forward to hearing from you and, hopefully, meeting you at concerts and CD signings!
