A French film distributor who sweet-talked investors out of more than $1.5 million by posing as a famous photographer with celebrity connections was sent off to state prison yesterday.
Alexis Quinlin, 46, got 21/2 to 7-1/2 years for deceiving almost two dozen investors. He is expected to be deported after serving his time in prison.
Quinlin lured his victims by pretending to be the well-known shooter Jean-Baptiste Mondino, and making up that he invested money for celebrities such as Madonna, John Travolta and Jodie Foster, prosecutors said.
Yesterday he looked more dapper than most prisoners in his conservative gray suit, crisp checkered dress shirt and polished wing tips - but apparently he's just as broke as a jailbird.
Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Ronald Zweibel said that's why he didn't order Quinlin to make restitution to the victims, who lost an estimated $1.7 million after investing in his company, which would export plasma TVs to Europe.
Prosecutors in the Manhattan district attorney's office said Quinlin partially repaid some investors in a Ponzi scheme, but used most of the cash to finance a lavish lifestyle and promote small independent films.
The sentence came out of a plea deal Quinlin made with prosecutors. He pleaded guilty to one count of grand larceny to cover the entire indictment and got half the maximum possible sentence.
The deal also required Quinlin to sign agreements with at least 10 of his victims to make restitution when he resumes work in the future.
Assistant District Attorney Matthew Amatruda said the victims included Joseph Rubin, who gave Quinlin $570,000; Simon Nemni, $142,750; Quinlin's roommate, Malik Diop, $100,000, and Cynthia Anthonio, $100,000.

Anyway they have not include the first demo "No one can stop advance" that I consider also very great. In a different way the songs of the first demo were less fast hardcore and more lo-fi punk, similir to Urinals, some Chain gang.. Killed By Death , Messthetics compilations stuff ... "The day after" is a great lofi new wave punk song , and others like "Nato" or "Eenheidswors" could easily be done by the Pagans, but recording with 4-track of course! .... This is pure classic! conga conga!! 6 songs from the demo.
