THROUGH TIME AND SPACE, ONE AND ONLY PASSION : THE BAG PIPE
According to some sources, Crusaders returning from the wars in Palestine first introduced the bagpipe into Europe. With time, the Arab sheperds of Palestine have lost its usage. It wasn't until th 20th century that the bagpipe was reintroduced into Palestine, which was under the british mandate. This lost musical art was relearned during the period of Sir John Glubb's reorganization and command of Jordan's colorful Bedouin Corps.
The instrument was transmitted from generation to generation, and reintroduced into Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon in the 70's
The National Institution of Social Care And Vocational Training commonly known as Beit Atfal Assoumoud was established in 1976 to provide a home for orphaned children from Tel al-Za'atar.The institution has concentrated on community development to help all children in the Lenanon camps through youth activities such as sport, cultural activities and summer camps.
The musical group Guirab was formed in 1989 as one of the activities of the scouts of Bourj al-Chamali, one of the most deprived camp in lebanon.
Guirab, which means Bagpipes in Arabic, is a mixed group of twenty musicians. The group tries to promote the art of the bagpipe amongst the Palestinians in Lebanon.
Bourj al-Chamali camp is located 3 km east of Sour in south Lebanon and has around 19000 registered Palestinian refugees. The camp was set up after the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict to provide tented shelter for Palestinian refugees mainly from Hawla and Tiberias in northern Palestine.
Approximately 80% of the camp's inhabitants work in the agriculture domain. This is a seasonal occupation that offers low daily wages. Therefore poverty is widespread among the majority of the camp's population.
The infrastructure of the camp is in a very poor condition. The drinking water and sewage systems have yet to be treated by the UNRWA.Since the government has imposed restrictions on the availability of construction materials in the camp, the living conditions and economic situation have deteriorated, and unemployment amongst construction workers is on the rise.
THE BEIT ATFAL ASSOUMOUD CENTER AT BOURJ AL-CHAMALI CAMP
The Beit Atfal Assoumoud center began functioning in 1986 in a small building at Bourj al-Chamali camp.As the work expanded and the number of families and children increased, a larger locale was needed. The center has expanded, and now consists of two floors.
The lower level includes the kindergarten, the management office, and the dental clinic. The upper level hosts the medical dispensary, the entertainment room, the Palestinian heritage museum, a room for various activities, and a computer room.
The center plays now an essential role in the life of the camp and fulfills a crucial social function.
THE OBJECTIVES OF BEIT ATFAL ASSOUMOUD CENTER ARE :
- Providing monthly financial support, through a special sponsorship program for families who lost their primary income provider and to help the mothers and guardians with the responsibility of raising their children.
- Providing cultural, recreational, educational and health services for those children and their families, through our centers in the camps.
- Contributing to the developing of the economic and professional capacities and potentials of the families, through special programs directed at the women and youth.
- Focusing on preserving the Palestinian identity of our people, by reviving our culture and heritage and transmitting them to the new generation

After you've finished here, you may like to hear this poem, & some songs, on myspace... Poem 187 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (see my blog for details): A SOUTH SHIELDS WALKABOUT - AUTUMN 2001
Out of the museum-and-gallery (Wiser on Cookson and the local way), Down Ocean Road with, to the right of me, Its eateries and, left, neat places to stay; Before, on either side, Marine Parks - The southern-one a most beautiful place, Teeming with moorhens, swans, grebes and mallards In a small lake at a scenic-hill’s base.
Then (holding chips from the parade’s cafe And, thus, a flock of gulls squawking above) Onto the South Pier I made my way: Seeing seaweed over rocks - like a glove - And high-and-dry sands held from transgression By growth of grass and the weaving of wood, Plus, in the dim light of a sleepy sun, Fishing boats returning to Tynemouth’s hood.
