Video Clip for Cockroach Killer From the EP It Takes A Nation Of Morons To Hold Us Back

After a historic speech in Parliament earlier this year in which a long overdue apology was delivered to our indigenous population and their ancestors, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd was tempted to offer a similar apology to anyone who was subsequently unlucky enough to have to endure the new release “It Takes a Nation of Morons to Hold us Back” by Sydney Jumbo-Procrasto-Trouser-Rockers, Guns Are For Kids. Convinced to re-consider this position by environment minister (and former Cold Chisel front man) Peter Garrett, who told* him “but Kev, this EP Rocks!!! I was crying like a refugee!**”, the Prime Minister relented and, reminiscent of his predecessor former PM John Howard, denied any of it had taken place.
One of Drum Media’s EPs of 2007, Guns are for Kids’ first EP “Too Much Red, Not Enough Red” was described by that very publication as an “immediate favourite”, but a survey of parents outside a local public school were unaware of Guns are for Kids or even their esteemed EP’s existence (in a side-note they were certainly unimpressed by the group’s moniker).
Recently released from Guantanamo Bay in Kogarah (where they recorded their latest opus) and decked out in white jumpsuits, “The Gunners” bring us: “It Takes a Nation of Morons to Hold us Back”. Our deconstructionist musketeers have really topped themselves this time (though not literally).
Hoping to raise the bar on previous efforts in the studio these coves studied such brilliant works as “Oops I did it again” by Kylie Minogue and absolutely anything by the late Shannon Noll (RIP).
In a grand gesture of self-sacrifice, and so moved by the new “music” that he and his band-mates had conjured up, bassist Reg Artless removed himself to the furthest corner of the globe (England) away from our intrepid punk no-wavers midway through this creative recording period.
Fortunately, to the rescue came drummer Helix Also. Armed with formidable persuasive social talents and sublime hypnosis skills, his “gifts” paid dividends when Nick Name agreed to join the fray, against better judgement. (Please do not say “awake from your dream” and clap your hands in his presence, we beg you!). Twanger Audrey L Carpetbagger and bellower Oswald Mainstream concurred, and the new line up was set. The second half of recording for the new EP was commenced and a new chapter of co-operation between sub-humans was re-kindled.
Behold! This CD is truly a testament to the fact that lightning rarely strikes twice in one place.
The band may even get sex because of it.
Here are some conversations people have had about the band:
“I like 75% of what they do” – Ray Ahn 2006
“I like about 90% of what they do now” – Ray Ahn 2008
“Guns Are For Kids are coming from the post-punk/no-wave school of “does this song want to stab me in the eye? I really think this song wants to stab me in the eye!” – Adam D Mills, Messandnoise magazine
“The record is a great balancing act, teetering between anarchy and sleekly innovative song craft.” - Mike McGovern, Alarm Press
“They seem to move backwards more than forward” – deafsparrow.com
"You don't hear this kind of stuff much right now. It harks back to the no-wave craziness of the early '90s, sans clarinets. Another thinking man's punk band is exactly what the doctor ordered." - ILI TULLOCH – Rave Magazine
