In the Halls of the King
The eternal battle of good against evil is a recurring universal theme in the history of mankind, spanning the most diverse forms of art throughout the centuries. Frequently, these concepts have been marked by clichéd thought patterns, but the thin line between light and darkness is rarely easy to define or recognise. "Tales Of Ithiria" is Haggard's very own saga about this eternal battle and takes place in the fantastic world of "Ithiria".
The album sees the German classic metal act leave the path of human history for the first time since they got together in 1991 to devote themselves to the realm of fantasy. A reorientation and reclamation of virgin soil which doesn't come as a total surprise, seeing that all the great authors of the fantasy genre have a history background, finding their inspiration in mankind's real past. And for Asis Nasseri, creative mastermind of this sizeable chamber orchestra which has come together under the name of Haggard, the journey into fictitious spheres is an expansion of his own horizons which allows plenty of room for new possibilities. "I have to admit that I left the field of real history with a heavy heart," he recalls the early days of his work on "Tales Of Ithiria". "I'm very interested in history, and there was a variety of themes that I would like to have written about – but this history thing has become almost normal for Haggard, and I consciously wanted to leave that familiar path."
The creator of the legendary country of "Ithiria" saw himself faced with totally new challenges: "I found it much easier to set to music authentic subject matter, such as Nostradamus and Galilei. But I discovered that I am twice as critical if I have to listen to my own story, supported by my own music: does the music suit the scene, is everything consistent in itself?" And so in the last four years, Haggard focussed all their energies on creating a unique opus which on the one hand features the ingenious signature of their past three recordings and sparkles with new energy at the same time. A project which took many months to complete and a lot of work in terms of composition and coordination, but at the end of the day the result consists of eleven amazing tracks which are full of Haggard's sublimeness, emotiveness and awesome metallic gravity. A masterpiece which not only explores the boundaries between good and evil, but also puts the concept of classical music and metal into a whole new perspective, adding a visionary dimension.
Again, Asis' earthy grunts are blended with classical female and male voices, carried by a majestic orchestra and traditional rock instrumentations consisting of lush drums, a humming bass and driving e-guitars. This vocal diversity is expanded even further by drummer Mike Terrana, renowned on the rock music scene for his work with Rage, Yngwie Malmsteen and Tarja Turunen, who lent his sonorous and expressive voice to the epic tales of Ithiria.
Expressive multi-faceted music, excellent songwriting between complexity and sensitive melodic arches and harmonious arrangements have always been among Haggard's strengths and have reached truly fantastic new levels on "Tales Of Ithiria". So it should come as no surprise when the melancholy legend "Hijo De La Luna" from Iberia shines in a sensitive and at the same time dark metallic outfit, emphasised by operatic magic, in line with the traditional songs which Haggard have recorded in the past, such as the old Swedish ballad "Herr Mannelig". And once more this experiment blends harmoniously into Haggard's sonic realm, into a dreamy cosmos full of enigmatic characters, such as Edris, Hammar, Sveldja, Wiese, Grimmbart and Alar, who battle over virtues such as courage, gallantry, honour, mercy and tolerance.
So enter the halls of the king and allow yourselves to be enchanted by the stories of Ithiria!

Der ewige Widerstreit des Bösen gegen das Gute ist ein universelles Thema der Menschheitsgeschichte, das die unterschiedlichsten Formen der Künste seit Jahrhunderten durchzieht. Vielfach waren diese Darstellungen von klischeehaften Denkmustern geprägt, doch die Grenzen von Licht und Dunkel sind selten einfach zu ziehen und zu erkennen. Mit „Tales Of Ithiria" erzählen Haggard nun ihre ganz eigene Sage dieses immerwährenden Kampfes, angesiedelt in der fantastischen Welt „Ithiria".
Damit verlassen die Klassik-Metaller aus deutschen Landen das erste Mal seit ihren ersten musikalischen Gehversuchen anno 1991 die Pfade unserer Historie und wenden sich dem Reich der Fantasie zu. Eine Umorientierung und Gewinnung von künstlerischem Neuland, die so verwunderlich nicht ist, denn alle großen Autoren des Fantasygenres sind der Geschichte entsprungen, fanden ihre Inspirationen in der realen Vergangenheit des Menschengeschlechtes. Und für Asis Nasseri, den kreativen Kopf des gewaltigen Kammerorchesters, das sich unter dem Namen Haggard zusammengefunden hat, ist diese Reise ins Fiktive eine Erweiterung des eigenen Horizontes, als auch ein Raum für neue Möglichkeiten. „Ich muss zugeben, ich habe die reale Geschichte schweren Herzens verlassen", erinnert er sich an den Beginn seiner Arbeit an den „Tales Of Ithiria". „Ich bin sehr an Geschichte interessiert, und hätte noch viele Themen gehabt, über die ich gerne geschrieben hätte – aber diese History-Sache ist bei Haggard ja schon fast normal, und ich wollte den normalen Pfad absichtlich verlassen."
Dabei sah sich der Schöpfer des sagenhaften Landes „Ithiria" ganz neuen Herausforderungen gegenübergestellt: „Es war für mich weitaus leichter, vorgefertigtes Material, wie beispielsweise Nostradamus und Galilei, zu vertonen. Bei einer eigenen Geschichte, gekoppelt mit eigener Musik, ist man jedoch doppelt kritisch: passt die Musik zur Szene, ist alles in sich schlüssig?" Entsprechend haben Haggard in den letzten vier Jahren all ihre Kräfte gebündelt, um ein einzigartiges Opus zu erschaffen, das einerseits die geniale Handschrift der drei vorherigen Werke aufweist, zugleich jedoch erfüllt ist von frischen Energien. Ein Unterfangen, das zahlreiche Monate und viel Kompositions- und Koordinationsarbeit beansprucht hat, letztendlich doch in elf sagenhaften Tracks mündet, die erneut erfüllt sind von Haggard'scher Erhabenheit, Emotionalität und gewaltiger metallischer Schwere. Ein Meisterwerk, das nicht nur die Grenzen zwischen Gut und Böse auslotet, sondern zugleich die Begrifflichkeiten Klassik und Metal in ein völlig neues Licht rückt und auf visionäre Weise neu befruchtet.
Asis' erdige Grunts vermengen sich so ein weiteres Mal mit weiblichen und männlichen klassischen Gesangsstimmen, getragen von einem majestätischen Orchester und einer traditionellen Rock-Instrumentierung aus sattem Schlagzeug, brummendem Bass und treibender E-Gitarre. Diese stimmliche Vielfalt wird noch durch Schlagzeuglegende Mike Terrana erweitert, den die Rockwelt als Drummer von Rage, Yngwie Malmsteen und auch Tarja Turunen kennt. Er lieh den Epen von Ithiria als würdevoller Erzähler seine sonore und expressive Stimme.
Ausdrucksstarker Facettenreichtum, ein hervorragendes Songwriting zwischen Komplexität und einfühlsamen Melodiebögen und harmonischen Arrangements waren bereits in der Vergangenheit die Stärken von Haggard, aber mit „Tales Of Ithiria" schwingen sich diese auf ein neues wahrlich fantastisches Niveau. Da darf es auch nicht verwundern, wenn die melancholische Legende „Hijo De La Luna" aus Iberien auf feinfühlige Weise in düstermetallenem Gewand und mit konzertanter Magie erstrahlt, denn schon zuvor haben Haggard sich überliefertem Liedgut angenommen, wie die altschwedische Ballade „Herr Mannelig". Und ein weiteres Mal fügt sich dies stimmig in das Klangreich von Haggard ein, in einen traumhaften Kosmos voller glänzender Charaktere, wie Edris, Hammar, Sveldja, Wiese, Grimmbart und Alar, die um die Tugenden Mut, Ritterlichkeit, Ehrenhaftigkeit, Barmherzigkeit, Vergebung und Toleranz ringen.
So tretet ein in des Königs Hallen und lasst euch verzaubern von den Geschichten von Ithiria!
Put together the first music video for one of the songs, that being for the song "Eel Marsh House", which is based on the movie "The Woman In Black". Wasn't sure to name it that instead of 'Eel Marsh..." ...Eel Marsh House being where the woman in black 'lived', and now haunts it. Though, she seems to haunt the general area of the village as well as the House. If anyone catches her gaze, looks into her eyes....a child will die, usually from the family of the person unfortunate to look at her. As you see what happens to the story's main character at the end.
