Sounds Like
Fans say her high voice is similar to early Kate Bush, and her low voice calls to mind Annie Lennox or David Bowie.

Happy Rhodes returns after a long absence with Find Me, her latest collection of songs, and it is well worth the wait. Exploring a sound both familiar and new, Happy covers a lot of emotional ground on Find Me. The subject matter ranges from the defiant anthem "She Won't Go", the last thoughts of a dying drowning victim in the title track, the lament of the eternal bridesmaid on "Chosen One" and the sweet tribute to a loved one in "Here and Hereafter."
Happy delivers one of the best songs of her career with the elegant and mesmerizing "Can't Let Go," exploring how the emotional scars of the past can be both a source of inspiration and a curse. The incredible range of her vocal instrument is complimented by a carefully crafted bed of electronics and traditional instruments into a sound that is both unique and incredibly listenable. Nowhere does this seem more apparent than the track "Queen" where she seems to ponder her role as siren to the marginalized, the searching and the broken. Thankfully she seems to be willing to take the mantle, as unwilling as it might be. We'll all continue to be the better for it.

"Charlie" - inspired by Charles Crumb
I can see Charlie
Sitting on his hands
Drowning in his chaos
And formulating plans
If I had stayed that way
(I could have been Charlie)
It would have been me
(Living on meds)
Wishing for a handgun
Or a rope on a sturdy tree
Wow, I just happened to drop in for a visit and saw those gorgeous photos that you posted, Vickie! Awesome! I wish Happy would get a hankering to perform again, guess I'll just have to keep hoping! And guess what? I met Meredith! At a Rachael Sage house concert in the backwoods of Marin County, CA! She was really nice. It was the coolest thing ever to meet a real Ectophile, not to mention someone who actually hosted a Happy Rhodes house concert!
Today is Mothers Day..and it's also Happy Rhodes Day on my site. There's a connection. :) My Best to all Happy people...and especially to Vickie for keeping these sites going.
Thanks! I just held auditions for the movie yesterday. Although only seven people showed up...... i managed to fill up my cast. I 'll probably have the list up soon followed by some initial screenshots a week or two from now. At the moment I'm trying to get a shooting schedule ready, and i should be shooting near the end of the month - maybe the beginning of March.
I'll keep in touch; this is where it's going to start to get interesting!
I realise that your profile is not Happy herself. But I love her music so much, and I noticed on your website that you had a myspace profile devoted to her, so I thought I'd hop over and join :)
I'm from Sydney Australia, and I'd never heard her music before a few months ago, but the first time I did, it was like "oh my god, I should have been listening to this since the 80s" (which was when I discovered Kate and other similar stuff which has always since been a major influence). I discovered Happy because I was looking for Kate Bush rarities and this one song I'd never heard of popped up now and again which was supposedly by "Kate Bush and Annie Lennox" (When the Rain Came Down) -- and I could never find out when it was made, or a full copy of it, until one day I search for the title instead of the artist, and sure enough - it was mislabelled - AND there was oh, so much more!!! Happy's music, lyrics, vocal presence and general purview just electrified my soul in a way most artists do not.
Ave to Happy Rhodes! And to you also Vickie, for your dedication in making sure she's able to be heard in far away places :)
Hi Vicky, thank you for the add and this page about Happy's music. Tell Happy I am so thrilled to find her work. "Find Me" knocked me out completely! All the best to you and Happy in 2008. Blessings Stephen www.StephenPeppos.com www.myspace.com/stephenpeppos VERTIGO hits FEB. 2008
thanks for the add and your kind comments, Vickie!! I was just thrilled about rediscovering Warpaint after all this time. Right on about "show the proof and hide the evidence".
OMG! I mean it- OMG!! I honestly did not believe that happy could top "Many Worlds..." but she has. I'm biting my nails listening to this cd. Its so brilliant!!!!!
I listened to the first five songs on my way to work this morning and I was pretty impressed. So far my favorite is "She Won't Go", but I love how "Can't Let Go" seems to be more her "classic" style. It sounds like it could be on any of her previous albums. SHE IS SO AMAZING!
just got the new CD in the mail today - (thank you, Vickie!) Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful!!! Happy always paints such amazing pictures with her music and her voice. and thanks again for including the lyrics so Nerds like me can sing along. ;)
Yay! I'm incredibly happy to have ownership of a Happy Rhodes CD at last! Really enjoying Find Me. Wish it was longer though, find myself getting to the end of the album and starting it again a bit too often! And a big thank you for Vickie in being so helpful getting out to everyone :)
After an extremely rough day at work, I come home to find Happy in my mailbox... well, Happy wasn't in my mailbox, but Find Me was. Thank you, thank you, thank you Vickie. And a job well done for Happy, its great...made my entire day!!!
Got it Today!! First thing, the cover art is absolutely AWESOME! The self-portrait is so Joni Mitchell-esque, the monsters are exquisite, and when you turn the CD over to see the full drawing, it so resembles the crouching Egyptian Sphinx, down to the facial expression even!! Most appropriate cover ever! Listened through only once, but I'm already in heaven, listening to it again.
Thank you, Vickie, and thank you, Happy, for finally getting this album published yourself!! xx Nusi
Hi Vickie [waves back across the ocean]. Yes! It arrived at the end of last week - thank you so, so much! I can't stop playing the title track, except for one brief period after the 2nd listen when I had to revisit Kate's 9th wave. I'd forgotten how powerful that suite is and Happy's Find Me reminded me of that fact. What a great album this is.
Hi Vickie, I just had to tell you how I discovered Happy. A freind of mine used to be a DJ at a radio station and would come across a lot of discs and bring them home to me as I loved different music as much as he did. Anyway he knew how much I loved Kate Bush and he brought home Equipoise, he thought she sounded like Kate and he knew I'd love her. I was blown away and have been a fan ever since. I would have loved to have seen her perform live and I still have flight benefits from the airlines I wanted to go to her last show but had family visiting from England so there was no way I could go. Yeah, being on myspace I've even added a few of those bands to my friends list, I should go back in a clean it up sometime. Isn't it a shame the radio doesn't play her? I would love a job as a program director for a radio station as they are all so corporate and have no idea what people really want to hear.
I'm really loving the new album. I just listened to the last two songs for the first time and they really touched me. I almost want to cry and probably will at some point. The lyrics are so raw and real and I think a lot of us can relate. On a brighter note my top favs are Charlie and Here and Hereafter! The latter is gorgeous and I love how the chorus is unpredictable at first, if that makes sense. :^)
congrats to Happy and thank you Vickie, from all Happy's fans in the south - more directly, me. The new songs are awesome, as usual!! I'm so Happy. (sorry....)
I too have just been going through the same thing with my band profile. Went through over 12 pages of friend requests. It soon builds up if you fall behind!
Totally know where you're coming from.
Anyway...
I've not abandoned the remix of Winter, I've merely shelved it for the time being to concentrate on Problem Being stuff.
However... I'm really liking where the remix was going and want to complete it.
I'm wondering... and this is a long shot... Does Happy have a purely accapella version to mix from? The higher key stuff is hard to sample for all the backing that's already there.
Let me know. Also, give me your email address so I can email you an mp3 once I've got a full working demo to send you.
