Hello, Stylus here. I'm a little-known Funk/Soul/Beats/Hip Hop/Roots DJ based in Exeter, UK, and I play other people's music. Sometimes I get paid for it, which is always appreciated.
Over the years, I've previously played alongside break-aficionados such as John Stapleton (Harmless/Dope on Plastic), Andy Smith & Scott Hendy (Dynamo Productions/Boca 45), DJ Format (Genuine), Color Climax (Breakin' Bread), Jon Kennedy (Grand Central) and Flevans (Tru Thoughts). Not bad, considering that I got into this DJing lark by accident, but hey, that's another story (and too long to put down here).
Highlight's of my 'career' include warming up the crowd (together with Exeter's boy wonder Lack Of Afro) for Breakestra in Spring 2006, and rocking Jelly Jazz in Newquay just last week. Regular gigs include bi-monthly Friday appearances at Hold it Down! (Timepiece, Exeter), and regular slots at The Root Down (Verve, Exeter).
Keeping it 'reel-to-reel' in the digital age (as always) I'm in the process of starting up a 7" *vinyl-only* label with fellow funkateer Lack Of Afro, imaginatively called 'Heavy Afro'. Each release will be limited to 200 copies, and pressed on heavy 220g vinyl. None of that MP3 rubbish here. News will be posted about the project as it comes, but it looks as though the first release will be ready for around November 2006.
You may have noticed that there's not much audio here yet, but that'll be addressed shortly. In the meantime, visit the media section of The Root Down site and download my 'Root Down Live!' mix. Due to the constant pestering from my fellow Root Down DJ's, I've finally recorded a proper 'live' mix - i.e. one that was recorded in one session and with *no* computer trickery (apart from the usual mastering process). "The Root Down Live! Pt. 1" is exactly that - 70 minutes of heavy funk and soul (with a bit of old school hip hop thrown in) recorded live. Hear the crackle (and loose beatmatching)! Highly recommended for those of you who want to know what the Root Down is all about, and it's been getting some serious props on the Ninja Tune forum. Get it before the bandwidth runs out!
Until next time, funk fans...
