Everyone has been saying hello to me today. Tipping hats, curtsying skirts, mouthing silent goodbyes when they leave. The guy next to me won't stop scratching his head, and I swear I'm seeing flakes bigger than teacup saucers chip off his scalp. But even he's smiling with all his teeth and asking me about my afternoon. It's not raining but everyone has their umbrellas. "Can't be too careful" they all say at the front door and without looking up the rest nod their heads in agreement. The woman at the counter chews on her hair while taking orders and every time she chokes on a mouthful, someone chuckles and says "Same shit, different day". I spent all morning thinking it was Sunday, but I know it doesn't come around anymore. If anyone ever tells you honest-to-goodness-God that things could be worse than what is going on right this split second, stop by and carve their address in my arm. I'll make them put a nickel in the swear jar.
