Finally, here comes an artist that is capable of bringing those feelings back. STORYTELLER, the debut album by Heston, is an exceptionally well composed body of work. Heston’s got one of those “instant classic” voices; confidently sensuous and informed by the best side of mellow 70’s soul. Nostalgic, yet very much his own.
With an equal talent for songwriting and producing, his debut release, STORYTELLER, is timeless.
Born in The Island of Dominica (British West Indies), singer-songwriter, Heston grew up with music all around him. Being surrounded by reggae, pop, classical, soul, R&B, rock music was commonplace and it is no surprise that radio, along with a collection of his father’s old records, would open the key to his soul and love for all types of music. From Barbara Streisand to Aretha Franklin, The Bee Gees, Marvin Gaye, Elton John, Beres Hammond, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson (to name a few) each musician looped a thread into his soul, and after listening to his music, it is clear that he has been influenced by the best.
With a career in music that began in Atlanta, GA, launched by a self-titled EP, he has defined his journey as a full-time musician, composer, songwriter and producer. “Creating timeless music has always been my ultimate goal,” says Heston with a poised yet humble demeanor. “I want to leave the world with music that can be played for a lifetime.”
A pleasant, easygoing vocal manner coupled with a sexy stage presence has consistently yielded a ground swelling of fans and lovers of his music. In 2007, his title track “IF” is regularly heard on BET-J's program "REAL LIFE DIVAS" starring Veronica Webb & Natalie Cole and became extremely popular on XM Satellite through Airtran Airlines Inflight Entertainment, The Soul Lounge, Vol. 1: The Vibe Compilation, This Is Soul 2005 CD (Soul Brother (UK), 2005), Atlanta Soul - Soulful Kinship From The Phoenix City CD (Unisex (UK), 2005). Accompanying a full-piece band with foundational rhythms that stem back to his island roots, comprised of percussions, horns, acoustic and electric guitars, his current independent album release, STORYTELLER, pulls out all of the stops with thirteen brilliantly composed tracks. I had a wonderful experience at Soultracks.com award show in Detriot, this past weekend, the show was very well put together, professional and sincere...Chris Riznik, the founder is doing so much to get soul music to its rightful place, up there at the top.... It gave me quite a bit of satisfaction to live the dream of doing music, something that i have always dreamed and put into existance all of my life.. I am truly a believer that one can accomplish anything that they desire, if you beleive and prepare, i have prepared for music my entire life!!!
I will say that the highlight of the weekend for me, and the entire weekend was a highlight reel, was going to "Hitsville USA" birthplace of motown music... the experiece was more than i could describe with limited time, you have to experience it for yourself.. I you are ever in Detroit, it is a must see and experience... from learning of all the different labels that Barry Gordy had to create to get all the artist on radio, because they would only allow a couple of artist from one label to get radio play in any one cycle, to finding out that Marvin Gaye played drums on Steve Wonders Album, and that he was a Janitor, at Motown Studios before the great artist, that we all know and love!!!(Huge Marvin FANATIC), to the couch that they, Marvin, Stevie, Smokey etc, slept in, the room where Barry Gordy and the Temptations packaged their own albums, the story goes on and on...When the tour came to a close, in the room, on the piano that Marvin played all those hits, where Stevie wrote and practiced all those hits, where Diana Ross wrote and recorded all the HITS!!!!!
Sy Smith, Russell Taylor and Myself, standing in the back corner of the room, suddenly became overwelmed with the history, there was a nervousness in the pit of my stomach, much like the first time you make love to someone that you truly love, and adore!!! It was the best thing that i have done for myself in years...
