  • Bio

Brent Colby - a native Montrealer - has been interested in Reggae music since his early teens. He grew up in a neighbourhood with many musicians and a high immigrant population from the West Indies. Frequently, he attended dances where Reggae music was played. His friend Wayne Chen's brother-in-law, Prince Patrick, was a selector at some of these dances. Brent and Wayne would listen to his records and try to sing on top of them. Influenced by Scientist's and Papa Tad's record "Allied Dub Selection", they tried to play Reggae music with friends. Following this period, Brent started his first band "The Aggrevators". They played their first show at the West Indian Church in the West Island. Brent was the lead vocalist and Buntin played bass. The audience was excited and liked their music. Performing in front of 500 people was their first baptism by fire and encouraged them to continue. In the early 80s, Buntin (today: Inus Aso Reggae Band) and Brent formed Montreal's first Ska band "Top Ranking". They released a single containing two tracks "Life is not so hard" and "Conqueror" which was a success in Canada and Europe, exspecially in Germany. In 1985, Brent left the band to form the "Swinging Relatives". They played extensively live and recorded several Ska and Reggae demos. In 1992, they released a self titled six track album featuring one song ("Riddim") with special guest Chaka Demus. It was recorded in Montreal. Brent went to Kingston, Jamaica, where the drummer of "Third World", Cornell Marshall, mixed and produced the tracks at The Mixing Lab. One year later, the Swinging Relatives released a Celtic Reggae Fusion cassette tape single "Attache ta tuque" with a corresponding video that was played on heavy rotation on Musique Plus. Brent also played guitar for Jah Cutta and "Determination" in the late 90s. Some of the musicians he opened up or played for are - Toots and the Maytales (Top Ranking, Swinging Relatives) - Aswad (Jah Cutta) - Maxi Priest (Jah Cutta) - Shabba Ranks (Jah Cutta) - Shaggy (Jah Cutta) - Lady Saw (Jah Cutta) - Elephant Man (Jah Cutta) - Judy Mowatt from the I-Threes - The Messenger Reggae Band - The Satellites Reggae Band - Buju Banton - Luciano. Nowadays, Brent releases new compositions and remixes of older songs under the pseudonym "HiFiChampion". More songs will be published within the next few months.
