I can do imitations. What I'm trying, though, is to be true to myself. I want to sound like, well, me.
I wrote True to the Roots: Americana Music Revealed (University of Nebraska Press) and, while doing so, taught myself how to play basic guitar and learned enough to write some simple songs.
I'm a journalist who writes about NASCAR and has written and/or edited and/or contributed to a number of books.
I live in Clinton, SC, and graduated from Furman University.
My guitars include a Pawless, a Martin, a Lazy River (recently enhanced by my friend Vince Pawless), a Baby Taylor, a Washburn Rover, an old Fender Telecaster I found in a pawn shop and a surprise favorite, a cheap black guitar I bought for $30 at a truck stop. I've got a mandolin, too. And some harmonicas.
Recently I won the George Cunningham Award as writer of year in the National Motorsports Press Association.
I play concerts, just me and my guitar behind a mike, lonely and alone, mostly near NASCAR tracks. I did, however, open for Bruce Robison at Charlotte's Puckett Farm Equipment in November 2008. At gigs, I raised $562 for the Victory Junction Gang Camp for sick children in 2008. I've played minor-league baseball games, restaurants and bars. I've been known to show up at open mics to play new songs for the first time in front of an audience.
Usually I have T-shirts and books (that I've written) for sale at gigs. I'm still hoping to produce a CD of original songs.
