What do you see as you view the crowds you minister to?
My wife and I had just talked about this… God allows me to relate to the people. I feel…I listen for His voice. It’s all about a connection. God allows me to connect with the people even if it means that I may have to say something to dude over here that might offend someone else. It’s really deep. It’s like He allows me to feel what the people are going through.
You and your ministry Hog Mob are quite unorthodox, I must admit. Every body looks like a neighborhood blood or crip, yet the spirit of Christ’s unity and love is very evident. What do you and Hog Mob do?
We share the message of Christ wherever we are.
Hog Mob is people that see the need and have the compassion to serve through Christ in their neighborhood. We are in 40 different cities and 3 different countries. We have 10 community ministries that aid those in prison, gangs and prostitution. We have a childcare ministry, a ministry that teaches how to righteously grieve instead of retaliate, and there’s Project Hope to help feed our neighborhoods; we do the Nino Brown thing (lol)…
Starting in January there will be a public outpouring. We’re going public with an internet based church so that all of our cell groups and others can all connect from wherever we are. Services will air twice a week (Sundays and Wednesdays). Also I have over 50 Hog Mob artists in development.
You gotta have thick skin to do this. It’s not for everybody. People don’t understand how I can not care about public opinion. I don’t carry that burden so I’m able to minister to who I’m called to the way that I’m called to. My music tells what I’ve been through but to the glory of God. There’s nothing wrong with telling about rape and prostitution as long as it’s not being glorified. I put a parental advisory tag on my albums, not ‘cause there’s cussin’ (there’s no cussin’), but because of the content. There are some things that an 8 year old should only learn from they mom or parent.
Your ministry gets judged negatively by how you look and sound. Your crowd is not the usual Christian looking crowd either – but it’s who you are called to.
We’ve been banned from a lot of Christian venues and so maybe after we go public, the people that ban us will finally see what we’re about. Yeah… a dude tried to slay me with the word today online about my tattoos. But like I told him, Christ’s spirit is gonna convict you off the lane you suppose to be in. Like I don’t think it’s a sin to drink. So I can sit back with a beer and watch the game. But it’s wrong to get drunk. I know I’m not drunk or getting faded. I’m well within my Christian guideline! But to someone else, their faith may be different and feel it’s a sin to drink. Therefore, they may not be able to drink at all due to their faith.
So then, on that note, what is your take on Christians who hang in the clubs but are always in church and justify being there?
“If you’re a Christian and you feel comfortable in the club… there’s something wrong”
I don’t agree with that at all… to kick it? That’s wrong. They probably feelin’ hung over in service on Sunday morning. Jesus could hang in a den of thieves. He’s Christ! We’re not. We’re trying to be like Him. When we go to the clubs it’s to do shows and we build a real relationship with the people who we meet and we begin a life with them and disciple them. If you a Christian and you feel comfortable in the club… there’s something wrong. If we’re there and there’s nothing more for us to do, we leave. There’s no hangin around. I never feel comfortable in clubs.
What steps of accountability should be taken for these young ministers?
I have people that I am accountable to. It’s important to be accountable but you also have to learn to rely on the direction of the Holy Spirit and not solely rely on man which can get dangerous. [Something I see] …there is a gap between the youth in Christ and the older Christians. There are a lot of older Christians that are against Christian rap and judge it, but then you have this younger extreme generation that listen, and it can be hard to put the two together for teaching.
You’re in your late 20’s? How did an entire international movement (Hog Mob) come from 1 young man, you, and grow to be so humbly huge?
The places where Hog Mob is at are the places where I’ve been when I was homeless but I was doin’ shows and ministering. These are the places where one person saw something positive and wanted to become a part of it and it has just grown from there over time.
How equipped with the word of God should Christian artists be?
I don’t believe we can ever judge that. I was a minister before I was even a Christian…You can be saved and not be a Christian. There is a difference. I was ministering to people. But there is a process of change that we all go through that may not look so “Christian” and people get judged. The church has tried to cut out that process of growth but instead we should understand it and be there through it.
What is the one thing you are willing to be transparent about that will help others?
I just recently got married. People are probably gonna raise an eyebrow to this but I didn’t marry for love. I married for obedience. Obedience is better than sacrifice. I knew when I met my wife that I would marry her. I prayed for God to give me someone now because I wouldn’t trust anyone later as things progress. I prayed for a wife that would be exactly what I need in line with my calling. Realize… I was homeless up until a year and a half ago, and now I’m married with two children that didn’t come from my loins. I suddenly had a family that I’m responsible for. I can sometimes feel the temptation to leave… just go… because I’ve always been able to just get up and go whenever. But now I have a family. I thought about the things I could do if we didn’t have kids… but this is real. I came from a life of bangin and hustlin’ in the street to bangin and hustlin’ for Christ just as hard. So when my wife wants me to sit and have date night or movie night, I have to remember that God has given me a family that comes first before the ministry. I gotta do right in my house first so I can go out and handle God’s work. And of course, I love my wife! I married her and I love her. It’s just that when you’ve seen what I’ve seen and been where I’ve been… I can’t go to bed at night without knowing that I’ve given the message of Christ or been a help to somebody.

WHAT DOES “HOG MOB” MEAN?
HOG MOB is an acronym that stands for:

HOW WE DO---HOG MOB?
HOG MOB is, and always will be, a Christ based, hip-hop music entity dedicated to infiltrating and influencing the mainstream music industry. However, HOG MOB is also a strong voice and catalyst of change in our communities. We recognize that our greatest impact and benefit will be realized through the lives impacted by our unselfish, practical acts of kindness and face-to-face ministry. sup family? just wanted 2 articulate that i have so much respect 4 ya'll...i saw some of ya'll perform and the artist that showed up (along with some other faithful brothers) drove 5 hours just to bless us n minister 2 us and there was an altar call and i respect sevin..he couldnt make it cuz he was sick but he had enuff love n integrity to make sure a dope artist was there 2 represent...some other folks woulda just said oh well i'm sick but not sevin...he actually cared about us just like he sez in his lyrics....crazy talent ya'll KEEP UP DA GREAT WORK...ur heavenly crown is comin! jyeah
