Howhood University Records is an independent hip-hop record label that consists of five lyricists, four producers, and one spoken word artist. The lyricists include Lucky Seven from Buffalo, NY, Drew Poz from Philadelphia, SD from outside Chicago, Charlie Star from DC, and Johnnie Walker from Long Island. Last but not least, spoken word artist Devaughn Harris is from California.
The production team includes producer Devon “Squizzy” Miller, producer James “Heff” Younge, producer “1,000” Alan Jones, and executive producer/recording engineer Matt “SMC” Cody. The record label was established in 2004 by Matt “SMC” Cody, Lucky Seven and Devon “Squizzy” Miller, when they combined their talents and began recording in the infamous Drew Hall their freshman year. The label quickly expanded to include more members who are just as eager to revive the artistry in hip-hop and carry the torch.
The Black College Experience is Howhood University Records second mixtape, following Lucky Seven: The Best Kept Secret, released in 2006. After selling over 1000 copies of The Best Kept Secret, Howhood is presenting The Black College Experience free. 500 free copies will be handed out around Howard’s campus at various events like The Black Market Place and other events in collaboration with Prestige Marketing. The Black College Experience is also available online at Datpiff.com and on Youtube.com. Also look out for a third project from Howhood due in spring ’09, as well as upcoming collaborations with Prestige Marketing and Centsless Clothing Company.
