Det norske kulturliv bugner til enhver tid over av sutrere. Det sutres altfor mye i Olje-Norge. Om mangel på turnéstøtte, øvingslokaler, instrumentkjøp, radiospilling og presseinteresse. DIY-mentaliteten har trange kår her til lands, og derfor er det så utrolig befriende når det da kommer noen sparkende inn fra høyre og bare leverer. Og det var akkurat dette Howl gjorde da de debuterte med «Higher Class Of Lush» (mesterlig produsert av Madrugadas Frode Jacobsen) i 2007. .. .. I mylderet av norske band som gir ut egenfinansierte skiver ble låten «Repeater» snappet opp av P3, som satte den på A-lista si. Allerede året etter var de ikke lenger bare betegnet som lovende eller et band med potensial. Skiva ble i 2008 reutgitt ut på EMI, og ytterligere to låter fant sin vei til P3s A-liste. Da året var omme sto de igjen som det totalt sett mest spilte bandet på radiokanalen, internasjonale navn inklusivt. I seg selv oppsiktsvekkende nok. Som finalister i Urørt, med massiv by:Larm-buzz og spillejobber på de største og mest betydningsfulle festivalene, har de deretter sakte, men sikkert, etablert seg i det øverste sjikt av landets rockband. .. .. I fjor gikk de i studio igjen (i det velrenommerte Kungstenstudios i Göteborg) for å spille inn oppfølgeren «Cold Water Music», og resultatet som foreligger er heldigvis (fortsatt) ikke et forsøk på å gå i retning av verken trender eller å klusse med sin egen formel, for dette er fremdeles storslagen, organisk rock’n’roll fremført av en sekstett med referansene i orden. .. .. Howl er et band som gir deg assosiasjoner til en bråte kredible og fjonge navn i rock- og pophistorien. Springsteen, Big Star, Cheap Trick, T-Rex, 70-talls-Iggy og støyete pop fra første halvdel av nittitallet (Posies, Teenage Fanclub, Urge Overkill m.fl). Navnene står formelig i kø, og bak dette velspilte referansebakteppet av vellyd har de attpåtil en sterk signatur i Simen Lunds lett hese og souldraperte vokal, som en slags syntese av Springsteens rundt «Born To Run» og Reigning Sound-sjef Greg Cartwright. .. .. Du har sikkert allerede fått med deg den «Lust For Life»-aktige og playlistede «Misdemeanors», og skiva som sådan er spekket med en rekke andre gullkorn... Denne gangen kommer det ikke til å gå et år før folk får bandet med seg... Denne gangen vet folk hva de har i vente... Denne gangen er Norge klare for et band som er befriende ujålete, en antitese av hipsterkåt. Et band som bare spiller rocken de selv ville kjøpt for å supplere sine bugnende platesamlinger. .. .. Takk og lov. .. .. Cold Water Music er produsert av Mattias Glavå (Broder Daniel, Dungen, Håkan Hellström, Whyte Seeds, Anna Järvinen m.fl.). og mikset av David Bianco (Madrugada, Red House Painters, Teenage Fanclub, Jayhawks, Primal Scream, Mick Jagger m.fl.).. ..HOWL.. .."Cold Water Music" (EMI Norway, 2010).. ..The Norwegian music scene is overflowed with whiners. All too many are whining about lack of tour support, rehearsal spaces, radio play and press coverage. The DIY philosophy isn’t exactly a walk in the park, which is also why it’s so liberating when someone just appears out of nowhere and just delivers. That was exactly what Howl did with their highly praised debut effort “Higher Class of Lush” in 2007 (brilliantly produced by Frode Jacobsen from Norwegian rockers Madrugada). .. .. From the vast selection of Norwegian artists releasing self-financed albums, Howl’s ‘Repeater’ was picked up by Norway’s radio channel NRK P3 and put into A-rotation. One year after they were no longer considered to be just a promising band with potential. The debut was later picked up and re-released by EMI in 2008, and two more songs were given A-list rotation on NRK P3. By the end of 2008, Howl were the most played artist on the radio channel, even above high profiled, international acts. As finalists in the national competition ‘Urørt’ for unsigned artists, a huge buzz from their explosive live performance at Scandinavia’s largest music conference/festival by:Larm, and several performances on the most prominent festivals in the country, Howl has slowly established themselves in the upper sphere of Norwegian rock bands. .. .. In the spring of 2009, Howl entered Kungstenstudios in Gothenburg, Sweden to record their follow-up ‘Cold Water Music’, and the result is fortunately (still) not an effort to follow any trends nor tampering with their own formula. This is still all about majestic, organic rock performed by a sextet with their references in order. .. .. Howl gives associations to several credible and well respected names in the history of rock and pop music. Springsteen, Big Star, Cheap Trick, T-Rex, 70’s Iggy Pop and noisy pop from the first half of the nineties (Posies, Teenage Fanclub, Urge Overkill). The list of references are basically endless, and behind this well performed canvass of carefully selected references, the strong signature of vocalist Simen Lund’s slightly hoarse and soul draped voice almost creates a synthesis between Springsteen around the ‘Born To Run’ era and Reigning Sound’s Greg Cartwright. .. .. You’ve probably already heard the ‘Lust for life’ driven single ‘Misdemeanors’ which is currently play listed on NRK P3, and the album is further filled to the brim with more treasures. .. .. This time it won’t be a year until people pays attention to Howl... This time people know what’s coming... This time around Norway is ready for a band that does not waste a minute of their energy on trends, fashion and tastemaker hype. A band that that only focuses on playing the kind of rock that they themselves would have added to their lavish record collections. .. .. Thank God for that. .. ..
