Since its inception in 2002, HQ has been a stalwart of cutting edge Drum & Bass music inviting luminaries such as D-Bridge, Marcus Intalex, Breakage and Loxy to the hallowed decks of The Cellar in Oxford. The cavernous venue is cited as a favourite venue to play by many of the D&B elite due to its intimate yet energetic vibe and its pièce de résistance, the air conditioning duct which is used by many a punter as a tool to show appreciation for the music. As the name suggests The Cellar is underground, part of it is under one of Oxford's main shopping streets although it would be hard to fathom what a typical Saturday shopper would make of the futuristic soul sound of HQ's music policy.
The night was the brainchild of Matt Zwager (Mattrick) and David May (Manikular) and actually started in a smaller venue on a Sunday evening as a social. Headliners on the first night were Fracture and Kasra. As the HQ became a regular fixture the pair hooked up with Mike Cantley (Chemical) who assisted in promotion and direction. Mike also had close links with another of Oxford's premier nights, Source and over the years HQ and Source have established a great bond of friendship and mutual respect. In 2003 the event relocated to a new venue, its current home, The Cellar. At the same time a new resident DJ was recruited, William Weeks aka DJ Azonica. The night went from strength to strength including its first and only all-nighter to bring in the new year!
As Mattrick is now married and having moved away to Berkshire , he could no longer put the time into HQ. Resident DJ Azonica was promoted to take his place to assist with promotion. The trio are dedicated to pushing the boundaries of the music and above all, ensuring that the night showcases some of the freshest, forward thinking talent that the global Drum & Bass scene can provide. In reflection of this, recent guests have included: Bungle, Survival, Alix Perez, Sabre & Skitty. The team also have a deep appreciation of the names who have helped shape the music into what it is today, celebrated spinners such as Doc Scott and DJ Lee are just two names who have passed through in recent months.
Supporting the headline artists are the residents, this core of talent is greater than the sum of its parts. Chemical and Azonica are superb deck technicians, each with an unfounded appreciation for quality Drum & Bass covering the entire spectrum. Hosting the proceedings are Mantmast & Burley, both of whom are fast rising stars holding down residencies in Bristol, London and Manchester as well as keeping up appearances at the majority of Oxford events. Also on mic duties is Manikular who has been hosting events in the City for well over a decade and he's still going strong, This is in addition to residencies in London and his now native Birmingham. For the early arriving crew Indecision and Rogue showcase an intoxicating blend of Hip Hop, Jazz, Soul, Funk and Disco with many other elements thrown in for good measure. Combined with the happy hour cocktails these guys warm things up perfectly.
