CRAASH hopes to see you there!
The Coalition for the Revitalization of Asian American Studies at Hunter (CRAASH) is dedicated to rejuvenating the Asian American Studies Program of Hunter College, as well as expanding the program to include a greater variety of courses. CRAASH aims to organize the Hunter community and spread awareness about the inadequate conditions of the AASP. Through petitioning, meeting with faculty, and promoting AASP events, we hope to educate the Hunter community about Asian American issues.
As of March 1, 2008, the Asian American Studies Program at Hunter College is in a miserable state. Here are some of the inadequate conditions that CRAASH hopes to improve:
* There has never been a permanent office. Right now, the AASP is based in the acting head’s office, which will be taken away in a few months. Dean Scott has been still looking for a new office for several months now.
* There is no full time faculty. All professors are either adjuncts or faculty from other departments.
*For spring '08, Hunter administrators granted the AASP a $0 budget with $500 alotted for supplies.
* For fall 2007, there were 17 classes offered - six of them were the same intro class. Classes are packed and in high demand every semester. Most of the courses promised in the catalog are not offered. Because of a non-existent budget, the AASP can only offer the same recycled courses for spring ’08.
They hope to offer NEW classes in fall '08 – however, the AASP cannot pay for the classes because there is no budget.
*Conditions were so horrible a few semesters ago that students could not declare even the AAS Minor.
Such conditions should not exist, especially since this year marks the 40th anniversary of the San Francisco State College Strike, the longest student strike in American history that led the way for the development of ethnic studies. We hope for a secure AASP that will last far into the future, and to demonstrate to CUNY and Hunter administrators that there is an Asian American community behind our fight - and that we won't stop until our AASP gets what it deserves as an academic program.
Your help is needed to sustain the only AASP in CUNY. To get involved:
1) Email us so we can add you to our Yahoo! group for updates and Spring '08 events
2) Friend CRAASH here and on Facebook, and INVITE YOUR FRIENDS
3) COME TO AASP EVENTS @ HUNTER!
