"AFI bassist's D.I.Y. homage to old-school Prince?
You might expect Revenge to resemble AFI's dark, moody punk, but be prepared for a shock: Most of the tracks on Revenge are a loving homage to early-'80s Prince. The melody and delivery on "Out of Town" are so similar to the Dirty Mind classic "When You Were Mine" that you may begin to unconsciously combine both songs' lyrics. What's more, Hunter, just like Prince back in the day, wrote, played, produced, recorded and mixed almost the entire album. He delivers the tracks in an unpolished, D.I.Y. style reminiscent of the miniature R&B icon's early work.
But if you're expecting AFI, steer clear. And if you haven't heard older Prince music (or barely remember it), Revenge may sound painfully naive and even funny to you. As derivative as it seems, Revenge still somehow emerges as a fun, infectiously simple, near-tribute to the Purple One. You know, before he went Platinum, had a symbol or rediscovered God." -AP magazine
