Bassist Steve Hunter, who has long flirted with flamenco, finally consummates the relationship in The Translators, which incorporates the trademark sounds of flamenco guitar (Damian Wright), palmas (clapping) and cajon (a box drum, now used widely in flamenco), played in addition to a regular kit by drummer James Hauptmann.Ben Hauptmann, meanwhile, tugs the textures in non-flamenco directions with his sometimes audacious work on acoustic and electric mandolins, without puncturing the music's dramatic and rather imperious spirit. Wright is an accomplished flamenco player and composer, who readily accommodates the expansion into wider musical pastures.
