My name was born before I was; attached to my flesh on September 2, 1975 at Fairbanks Memorial Hospital. Outside of the delivery room, snow had yet to fall on Alaskan autumn ground. Inside, a Canadian French woman cradled her newborn son, and then passed him onto the gentle mechanic hands of my Mexican father. I wonder: did they know by the way I took my first breath that their child would group up to be poet?
Did cries for mother’s milk mimic those I would make for justice?
Did I try to break the bars on my crib like a future prison abolitionist?
Did I throw temper tantrums like Molotov; shake rattle like perception?
Did they know their son would stand before members of the United Nations travel across continents, stand before HBO and international audiences as an indigenous citizen, pro justice/ feminist/ Palestinian descendant of aboriginal immigrants? Or did they simply say: “Welcome to the world Mark Gonzales, it is yours' to make of it what you will” Welcome to a glimpse into my world; no passports are needed. Just an open mind and an open mic, and maybe some dim lights.
