In most African cultures, names almost always have a meaning and are not given lightly. Iman's name means literally means 'to learn' in arabic. It could be said that Iman Abdulmajid a polyglot who speaks 5 languages has lived her name to the full.
In a profession not well known for its brains but more for its beauty, Iman was actually ‘discovered’ by the American photographer Peter Beard whilst studying political science at Nairobi University in Kenya.
Had she not gone on to become a model, occasional film actress and entrepreneur Iman could have well followed her father into a diplomatic career. He was an erstwhile Somali ambassador to Saudi Arabia.
Iman was the first African model to be featured on the cover of Vogue in 1979 and soon followed with being the first African woman to sign a major cosmetics contract.
Despite coming from a privileged background, in the early days various stereotypes were touted about her in order to add to the mystique of her sudden and dramatic appearance onto the international fashion circuit.
However, Iman used her nouse to remain in control of her image stating in her autobiography I am Iman "I've always said that I was an accomplice to the Iman mythology, never a victim..."
Iman continued to use her brains to navigate a sensational career in a profession that had previously not fully opened its doors to women of her skin colour. Her lithe beauty allowed models like Waris Dire and Alek Wek to follow on in her wake
She often joked of days when make up artists did not know how to get the best out of her looks - something which led her in 1994 to head her own burgeoning eponymously named cosmetics firm that specialises in make up for dark skinned women.

Despite her move to the United States and subsequently taking on American citizenship she has not stopped supporting causes that effect great change in Africa. She is an active member of Action Against Hunger.
Iman is married to the singer David Bowie and together they have a daughter Alexandria Zahra. Iman also has another daughter Zulekha from a previous marriage.
