“I don’t really think of the ‘mad’ part of my name as ‘angry,’ but more so as in ‘mad scientist. I’ve been a ‘take it apart and put it back together’ person all my life. I spent four years reading manuals to machines that I didn’t even own, just to figure out the science behind them.”
“I used to draw track channels on the back of church programs and plot out drum patterns. I kept an old crossfader on my keychain to practice flares while away from home. In my crew, I was definitely the person everyone came to when they needed to figure something out. Eventually I couldn’t help them as often – I was too busy making beats.”
Mad Beat Addiction
“I have around 1600 beats that I still have Pro Tools session files for, around 200-300 beats that I only have 2-track mixes of, and if I had to modestly guess, around 400-500 beats on CDs that never made it out of the beat machine and are on disks. A lot of times, beats have taken the place of food. It’s not even that I’m the fastest producer – I’m just producing most of the time.”

“Q-Tip said it best: ‘record company people are shady. I got into this game expecting that, but what I didn’t expect was that almost everyone else is shady, too. A lot of this game reminds me of high school – you got your in-crowd, weirdos, jocks, down-ass chicks, whatever. That shit is just stupid. It’s like whoever has the best fake smile is the coolest. But hey, what do I know? I skipped class to get records from the thrift store.”

”When I first moved to NYC from Orlando, FL, I used to go to the Beat Society showcases at the Knitting Factory to listen to up-and-coming producers. Somebody pointed out that every time a ridiculous beat came on, my face scrunched up like a raisin, like I was mad. It was then that I realized that’s the effect I’m trying to have on people with my music. I know I’ve made a good beat when I have a headache due to excessive mean muggin’ at the end of the process.”
