Influences
"If you're going to try, go all the way. Otherwise don't even start. This could mean losing girlfriends, wives, relatives, jobs. And maybe your mind. It could mean not eating for three or four days. It could mean freezing on a park bench. It could mean jail. It could mean derision. It could mean mockery, isolation. Isolation is the gift. All the others are a test of your endurance. Of how much you really want to do it. And you'll do it, despite rejection in the worst odds. And it will be better than anything else you can imagine. If you're going to try, go all the way. There is no other feeling like that. You will be alone with the gods. And the nights will flame with fire. You will ride life straight to perfect laughter. It's the only good fight there is." -Charles Bukowski (by way of The Ataris)

The Allman Brothers meets The Grateful Dead, with some reggae, country, jazz, folk, and pop thrown in.
OFFICIAL BIO
The three men who comprise Indacoda Blue may be young, with an average age of 22.3, but they are experienced, having played together in various forms for seven years. Nick Otting (vocals, guitar), Cory Mirto (drums), and Ben Arnold (bass, vocals) play a unique and pleasing combination of rock, blues, jazz, and folk, with elements of pop, reggae, and country mixed within. They play original music with a few classic covers thrown in to draw in the audience. Indacoda Blue is starting to gain respect and name recognition within the local music community. The band has been performing its entertaining live show at venues up and down the lakeshore in towns such as Holland, Saugatuck, South Haven, and St. Joseph, and is starting to branch out into larger areas like Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo. Indacoda Blue is also prolific, having recorded its demo after only two months of existence. They have around 45 songs in their repertoire, and more are being written at every practice. 13 of these originals were released as their debut full-length album, titled Where Everybody Treats You Right, in February 2009.
NOW THAT THAT'S OVER, THE BACKSTORY:
Nick Otting (vocals/guitar), Ben Arnold (bass/vocals) and Cory Mirto (drums) were a punk/grunge band named Smut Puppies. This band played for three-plus years, assuming various names (Amplifuzz, Shindig) and members (former bassist Marty Lambers). The band started when all of the members were still in high school, and played shows at venues as varied as coffeeshops, local watering holes (while all the members were underage), school dances and even a K-Mart. The Smut Puppies even recorded two albums (2003's Smut Puppies and 2004's unreleased Makes Lives Better) before facing an untimely demise in spring of 2005.
Once the SPs disintegrated, the members went their separate ways. Nick graduated and spent nearly a year traveling the countryside in a VW Bug. Ben focused on college and tried to form other bands. Cory finished his last two years of high school and became a chef at Everyday People Cafe, a classy Douglas restaurant.
But the urge was still there. They knew they had to get the magic back. Once Nick was rumored to return, the three started making plans. Plans to make music together, and to live together. Nick and Cory both enrolled in Lake Michigan College, and Ben, seeking a change from the rigorous gas station life, got a job in nearby South Haven. The guys started renting a house on the beach, separated from their neighbors by forest so they could make all the noise they wanted.
And make noise they did! Due to Nick's cross country road trip, the band had an instant repetoire of songs about life, love, travel, and the Man. All three members have grown immensely as musicians and songwriters since they were Puppies. A practice gig in Saugatuck confirmed that they were on the right track: The songs were a hit! All they needed was a name.
Enter Jake Olund: friend, roadie and inadvertent namer of the band. An off-the-cuff suggestion turned into Indacoda Blue. The name has no real meaning, morphing from the phrase "new code of blues".
Now (March '09) the band is two and a half years old, their debut album has been released, and the gigs are pouring in. They've come a long way since playing for two people in a garage at a birthday party (while everyone else listened to a boom box outside, no less), and they show no signs of slowing down anytime soon. Look for these guys to jump to full-time touring ASAP...
