Bio
Initial (b. Ryan Porter) is a rapper and producer from Glace Bay, a community on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. In 2001, Initial dropped out of art school. Shortly after, he met local rapper Jay Bizzy who introduced him to Classified, the iconic Halifax emcee who Initial began recording with and buying beats from. A year later, Initial moved back to Glace Bay and joined the hip hop group The Prophets with Mr. Mack, Marc Cee and KNZ, performing at Cape Breton's local fall music festival, Gobblefest. In 2003, The Prophets went solo and Initial moved back to Halifax with friend and fellow rapper eso, where he lived in the same building as Halifax hip hop legends Drunkness Monster and Scratch Bastid, recording in an in-house studio and doing shows with Classified, Drunkess Monster and The Goods. In 2005 Initial released his debut album, Say Again, then returned to Glace Bay where he founded INI Records with eso and Mr. Mack. Over the next few years, Initial would open for Classified on both his Boy-Cott-In the Industry Tour and While You Were Sleeping Tour at the Savoy Theater in Glace Bay, and for Snoop Dogg's Malice in Wonderland Tour in Sydney, NS, in 2010. In 2012, Initial released his sophomore album What Happened, featuring the singles "What Happened," "Times Like This," "My Hometown ft. Mr. Mack," and "What to Say ft. eso." Recently, he has opened for Royce Da 5'9 and Swollen Members. In addition to his work as a musician, Initial is an artist, graphic designer, and owner of Bay Boy Clothing.
