INTO THE STORM

Post-metal these days is about as exciting as the umpteen hundred Law and Order reruns that you can find on just about every other channel during evening programming. The genre is a dead horse that has been beaten into submission, turned into glue and is currently being used by some kid in elementary school. There’s barely any life left to this stagnant genre, although occasionally there’s a flash of hope.

Seattle quartet Into the Storm proves the genre might not be ready for the early grave previously mentioned! On their self-released debut, Amidst a Sea of Chaos, the band shows that injecting a little chaos into the mix might just be the ticket to resuscitating the genre’s rotten corpse. They’re more in line with Botch and Fugazi, but still have the requisite amount of Baroness, Isis and Neurosis simmering on the backburner. Another welcome addition is that they don’t feel the need to overproduce their shit, instead settling on a warm, natural production job that’s wonderfully in the red and on the verge of collapsing, but still full of deep, clear tones; especially in the drum category.
