Keith Farnan: Cruel and Unusual
Irish Comedian Versus American Death Penalty. No Contest!
“With his shaggy mind and ruffled demeanour he is as close to a reincarnated pre-Black Books Dylan Moran as we're likely to see nowadays”
The Scotsman
‘Cruel and Unusual’ is Keith Farnan's first full-length Solo Stand-up show since he stopped working as a Solicitor. (That will form the basis of a separate show entitled "What was I thinking?”)
Although the death penalty is not often noted as a topic of comedy, Keith's experiences as an intern with a public defender in Georgia and with the Innocence Project in New York allow him to take a comic swipe against the lunacy of capital punishment.
‘Cruel and Unusual’ is a comedy show telling the story of Keith Farnan’s journey from law school in Ireland to the Innocence Project in New York city, meeting with Sr.Helen Prejean of Dead Man Walking fame, to a public defenders office in Georgia where he figures out that the Irish might just be the only people who can tell America to stop the madness.
This year, Kenny Richey’s return home to Scotland after spending more than 20 years on Death Row in America has raised the awareness of the people in Ireland and the UK of the atrocities committed in the criminal system there. This same year, one of the Irish students Keith subsequently placed in the Innocence Project, Niamh Gunn, took part in finally freeing Walter Swift from prison in Detroit after 26 years.
‘Cruel and Unusual’ aims to make a laughing stock of the stocks by ridiculing the system as seen through the eyes of an (only slightly) naive Irishman. It also depicts the Death Penalty in its true light, a barbaric, racist, politically motivated act of revenge that doesn’t achieve any of its so called aims including deterring violent crime. It’s also just plain stupid! This is the world premiere of this show. After a run in the UK and Ireland, Keith hopes to bring the show across America.
Keith Farnan has performed across the world, from the Boston International Comedy Festival, to the “Best of the Irish” shows at the Edinburgh Festival and on to solo shows in Norway and Denmark.
When in Ireland, he is a resident host at the Laughter Lounge in Dublin and performs in Clubs around Ireland and the UK including being a regular at the Comedy Store. He has also performed at Festivals including Oxegen and the Cat Laughs.
He filmed the stand up show, “One Night Stand” for BBC television and the Irish Stand-up show, the “Liffey Laughs” for RTE.
In New York, he was recently part of the British(and Irish) Invasion Comedy Tour and played the New York Underground Comedy Festival as well as in clubs and shows across the city
He has written and performed his own comedy, ”The Insomniac Club” for BBC radio.
“If Eddie Izzard had been Irish, he'd surely have turned out a lot like Keith Farnan.”
