Isabel at Sunset formed in Parma in early 2006. Their music touches on early 1990s lo-fi indie and Britpop, drawing inspiration from the likes of Pavement, the Times, Hefner, Big Star, Monty Python, Talk Talk, Dr Who, Neil Young, Wilco, Oasis and Sparklehorse. The band’s decision to sing in English bears a natural reflection on the group’s various musical, cinematic, literary and television influences. An underlying sense of humour, fun, and melancholy characterises songs which seem to recognise that life can be ridiculous and brilliant enough without contrived artistic statement.
Isabel released their debut album, Meet the Gang! on Tea Kettle Records in Spring 2007 to a largely positive reception, including strong support from sources in the UK and USA. An album of the week review for San Diego based webzine Treble was followed by encouraging coverage from the likes of God Is in the TV, Stylus, The Runout Groove, and WTJU in Virginia. This mirrored acclaim from several national music publications in Italy. The band toured the album through the year, including a support slot with Mark Gardener.
In 2008 Isabel embarked on their first international shows in support of Meet the gang! An Easter UK mini-tour was followed by Irish dates in June. BBC 6music’s Gideon Coe and Steve Lamacq shows gave the record airplay, with sessions for Dublin radio and web TV stations Phantom FM and Balcony TV following suit. Isabel are set to record their second album in Portland, OR with Jeff Stuart Saltzman (Stephen Malkmus, Death Cab for Cutie, Sleater Kinney) in March, and hope to spread their music internationally wherever possible.
