Influences
I have been influenced by a lot of people, sounds and experiences. People: My Dad, J.S. Bach, Bartok, Raffi, Nick Drake, The Rachels, Andy Hillhouse, Martin Hayes, Liz Carroll, Oliver Schroer, Vasen, The Bills, Gavin Bryer, James Keelaghan, Philip Glass, Kim Barlow, Genticorum, God... Sounds: The pacific ocean, the viola Ken put in my hands, Andy's groovin guitar, rain on my roof, kids laughing, the train in my childhood back yard... Experiences: my life with drew, my community on SSI, my garden, sailing the pacific ocean, hanging with cats, playing music with passionate people, eating organic 80% cocoa chocolate...
Meow Meow about Zav:
I'm from Salt Spring Island BC Canada. I compose and play a 5 string viola I call a "fiddola", and keys. (Not the kind I start my old truck with). I love the earth, my community, and the transformational power of music. I went to University and got a degree in composition and classical piano, and that was pretty fun. Now I love to create my own tunes, which I hope you'll have a listen to, and I should mention that I am rather fond of cats. (Some call me Kitty).
Getting Serious:
My debut album "Reach" was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award, a Western Canadian Music Award, and a Plain Folk Music Award. I made a new album which I think is even better-- it's a fab duo album with the rockin' Andy Hillhouse (guitar, vocals) called "Spark"; it's officially released on Dog My Cat Records and has also been nominated for WCMA and CFMA awards. My music has been featured on CBC's Vinyl Cafe and I am currently the subject of a documentary film being made about my educational work with fiddle students in BC and the Northwest Territories (www.fiddleworks.ca). I am also a newly published author with Frederick Harris Music.
I love treking the North teaching fiddle in remote aboriginal villages and eating caribou and playing music with the locals and wearing my parka under the Northern Lights. So when I'm not touring my music or teaching or holed up composing or out in the garden hangin' with the fairies, then I'm probably having a great time on the road playing with my wonderful friend and musical co-creator Andy Hillhouse or Canada's most amazing singer/songwriter, James Keelaghan. And that's Zav RT in a nutshell. (I am a nut. Are you?)
Are you looking for a new violin or viola bow? My carbon fiber bow was designed for people that play lively music, especially fiddlers

Thank you
Hi Jaime! How was Goderich??? I'm in the Glasgow airport on my way home after a loooong UK tour. Glad to be heading back. Say hello to Drew from Brian and I.
It was nice to hear you play again in Goderich. Great music! Great CD! Sadly though, I don't qualify for the "GG" position (I could do just about everything except tune the guitars... oh well ;)
Hey Jaime - the Jig of Contemplation sounds awesome! Somehow I missed that you and Andy released a cd last year - (I'm a friend of Andy's from Van). Have a great time in Toronto and give Andy a hug for me. Norah
What happened to you the other night? I thought we would see you at the hospital so I didn't say goodbye to you, or James, or Mark or Brian. If you're still with any of them, please give them all an enormous hug for me (especially James)and then give yourslef one too. Well, I hope you got your street dog anyway, you sly vegetarian, you! Have a great time in Ft. Providence and keep in touch about tuens for camp- we gotta play together!
How are you doing. Your tune "Skittles at Buckley Bay" is not just our favorite, but also became one of most popular tune in fiddle contest. Thank you.
So, uh, I'm a little guilty. I just found the contract for Fiddleworks in the big black hole called my room. I'll send it to you right away. Hope the tour is/was fantastic.
Oh hey - I've actually seen you perform with Andy and I like yer style. I play anything pretty much/fiddle/improv/ bit of a classical freak but anything goes. A bunch of us get together and they just loooovvve beeswing (fisherman's ?). Anyhoo, nice to meet you ... p.s. did u invent the fiddola or is that a common instrument? never heard of it ....
Hey there, are you still alive? You must be nearing the end now. Was so nice to catch up the other night, and to hear you play. Last time we saw you on stage I think you were wearing strategically placed balloons and other strange garmonts! ;-)
Hi Jaime
Ditto what Rachel says. I love the CD - thank you so much. And I promise you will get one of mine too. I am definately coming home after my gig on the Saturday, so should get there by about one in the morning if the party is still going strong. Fingers crossed. Bet you have had your fill of traffic cones in the last few days with all that travelling! Hope to catch you next week.
Love Fi
