ABOUT JTC
JTC is Influenced by Larry Heard, Robert Hood, Jeff Mills, Sleezy D, Liaisons Dangereuses, Carlos Souffront, D.A.F., Ron Hardy, Traxx, Kevin Saunderson, Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Kenny Larkin, the experimental counterpoint basslines of the 303 and similar illusive-accent arpeggiations that were mastered by artists like Larry Heard and Chrislo Haas; the heavy slow tempo of belgian newbeat; acid of the 1990's in Cologne (only the jackingest variety); and interestingly juxtaposed, sometimes non-musical, hypnotic cycle phrases in dance music. The DJ and recording artist, Traxx calls combinations of these elements "the kode". This musical code can be found in many styles of dance and ritual music and is a crucial element in music we like. See the jackingest *cream of the crop* disco, (not)disco, boogie, house, techno, jack tracks, acid, newbeat, italo disco, latin freestyle, electro, new wave, industrial, and cosmic.
BIOGRAPHY (PRESS)
With two LPs and a slew of 12" and collaborative projects,Tadd Mullinix has been leading the way for a new era of jackin' house, acid house, and techno under the alias James T Cotton or JTC. Recording for Spectral, TNT, Nation, Creme Organisation, Udek, and Relief, collaborating with Todd Osborne, D'marc Cantu and Traxx, and having remixed Orgue Electronique and Depeche Mode - he has received critical acclaim for his raw productions from influentials like Laurent Garnier, Traxx, and Trevor Jackson. In a recent ResidentAdvisor interview, Playgroup's Jackson says, "James T. Cotton is a genius. Everything he does, I pretty much have. He, again, just makes raw sounding records".
Mullinix has been DJing professionally since the mid-90s, meanwhile drawing influences from Ron Hardy to Jeff Mills and pummeling the box as witnessed at his recent performance in Chicago for Nation's LP Release party. A recording of this session can be found at Jak-Nation.com in the podcast section. JTC has been touring the world and also playing regularly in his hometown, Ann Arbor, excorcising demons with his unique blend of unreleased jack-tracks, disco, and everything in-between.
COLLABORATIONS TNT - a collaboration with Todd Osborn. A special dance music project using analogue synths and classic drum machines. The TNT label is strictly low budget and the pressings are limited.
2AMFM - with D'marc Cantu. Jakbeat tracks in the styles of house, and techno.
SATURN V - with Traxx. A frequent collaborator. You can find Saturn V on Muzique, Relief, and on the second JTC LP on Spectral "Like No One".
X2 - with Traxx and D'marc Cantu. This collab was sparked in my home studio when I introduced the two.
The Dirty Criminals: are technically a chosen few of Traxx's partners in crime. Past criminals have been: Jamal Moss, Deecoy, and JTC.
WHAT IS JAKBEAT?
I am going to try to speak for a few other people in our tightly knit circle that I know feel strongly about this.
What defines jakbeat tracks has a lot to do with the jacking feeling and little to do with labels, aesthetics, or any list of synthesizers. The Jack sound exists in an endless assortment of musics. For example: italo can jack, disco can jack, detroit techno can jack, industrial can jack, cosmic can jack, etc... My peers and I are not Chicago house purists. For a while it was generally known that you do not need a Roland TB303 to make 'acid'. But as other fashions took control of o
our house that fundamental understanding was lost... and the aesthetic took over. A contrived image was left with the masses. Do not let superficial trend-setting and mainstream or 'hipster' fashion culture hijack this respectable art. Don't let "electroclash" (i won't dignify it with capitalization) happen to everything. We don't need more bargain-basement versions of acid, or new beat, or jack tracks. We have experienced the acid house era. Let us learn from our history and jack to the future ... not just the past.
