About Jason Karaban
Jason Karaban: Mayfly - Released 4/07/09 -
All too brief EP of haunted despair and melancholy.
Karaban’s released a trio of exquisitely beautiful pop records, 2006’s Doomed to Make Choices, its cohort Leftovers, and last year’s Sobriety Kills. Now busy in the studio on a follow-up, he’s issued this striking three-song EP. Each of Karaban’s releases seems more pensive than the last, and these stripped-down piano-and-voice arrangements are at once meditative in instrumental tone and expansive in melodic heft. Inspired by a letter from a Civil War general to his wife, Karaban’s written songs whose moodiness conjures up the desolation and fear that soldiers endure before and after battle.
The opening “Sullivan’s Ballou” is played with the piano’s dampers up, chords floating reflectively in their own sustain, intertwining with wordless vocal backing and ghostly images of fallen comrades laying dead in open fields. The harmony vocal of “No Casualties” clings more tightly to the lead, but even with Chris Joyner’s piano playing more ornate patterns, a sense of dread is heard in the defeated undertaking of retreat. The closing “A Far Better Place” is similarly joyless in its declaration of victory, with a piano played up front chiming like funeral bells as the vocals recede into the hereafter.
Earlier comparisons with Michael Penn and Jason Falkner fail to capture the essence of despair permeating these new tracks. Even Karaban’s previous releases do not adequately prepare listeners for these spare, down-tempo readings. That said, the song craft that was built up in layers on Sobriety Kills now allows Karaban to intensify his emotional impact by stripping tracks to their basics. It’s daring to let your melodies and vocals stand naked before listeners’ ears, but Karaban has the goods, trusts his art and shares the rewards. [©2009 hyperbolium dot com]

Sobriety Kills – Released 1/08 -
Sobriety Kills, Jason Karaban’s sophomore release following 2006’s Doomed to Make Choices, is an engaging and remarkable record, filled with compelling melodies, prodding lyrics and Karaban’s memorable voice. When tastemakers talk about Jason Karaban, they talk about his songwriting. KCRW’s Chris Douridas, for instance, has characterized Karaban’s new album, Sobriety Kills (due in January from Ascend Records), as “a collection of well-crafted alt-pop songs that give you an unabashed look into this ever evolving singer-songwriter’s world.” WXPN’s Bruce Warren lauded his “terrific songwriting skills,” tossing around adjectives like “catchy” and “dexterous.” And music supervisors looking to place songs in films and on TV have repeatedly turned to Karaban for compelling melodies.
“For me, writing songs is like the cat that falls out the window,” he says of his oft-commented-upon songwriting. “It flips and spins and contorts itself all the way down but somehow manages to land on its feet.” The remarkably concise nature of the gems comprising Sobriety Kills – most of which clock in at two minutes and change, can be attributed to Karaban’s impulsive nature.
When it came time to record Sobriety Kills, Karaban called on longtime collaborator Barrie Maguire (Amos Lee, The Wallflowers, Natalie Merchant) who co-produced/engineered/mixed and played on the record. Ani DiFranco lent her voice in addition to playing multiple instruments on the track “Perfect Falling Out”. Also on hand were MVP David Immerglück (Counting Crows), who lent his prodigious skills on guitar, pedal steel, banjo, mandolin and bass and Glen Phillips (Toad the Wet Sprocket), who co-wrote “Because I Love You” and “Not Afraid to Die.”
Creative adaptation is one of the key’s to Karaban’s success. “I’ve always just followed the music wherever it’s taken me,” he confirms. “I’ve never turned my back on it.”

“Doomed to Make Choices”
Released - Summer of 2006
Don’t worry. This isn’t going to be your usual lengthy, garrulous, drawn out bio outlining my tumultuous past, the record deal gone bad and all the gripes in-between. I see no need to revisit a past that is no longer relevant. What matters is the music you’re listening to now. So, I’ll be brief, spare you the unimportant details and give you the quick history of the genesis of my first solo record.
It all starts with producer Mike Napolitano. Seemed that a lot of records I was listening to over the past few years had his name on them (Joseph Arthur, Jeff Klein, Twilight Singers). I made it my mission to track him down. A chance meeting with Greg Dulli in a liquor store parking lot in Silverlake got me Mike’s number. After a few phone calls and an onslaught of demos, Mike agreed to produce my record. That was September 2005. From that point forward, I spent the next 5 months recording the record in bits and pieces; traveling from Los Angeles to New Orleans to Minneapolis to New York and back to New Orleans where I finally completed the record in January of 2006.
Throughout those 5 months I was fortunate to have crossed paths with an incredibly talented group of artists, all of whom graciously lent their talents to help make this record possible. To name a few: Ani Difranco laid down backing vocals, guitar, bass and keyboards on “Perfect Falling Out” and “Don’t You Love When That Happens” and also contributed backing vocals on “Crying Spell” and “Look What You’ve Done.” Also, Dave Pirner (Soul Asylum), Ivan Neville (Keith Richards, Neville Brothers) David Immerglück (Counting Crows) and Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello) made significant contributions throughout the record.
Since its completion, I’ve been busy getting the record out there. Already, 3 songs have been getting airplay on KCRW (Los Angeles) and WXPN (Philadelphia) and 4 songs have been placed in the feature film, “Novel Romance.” In addition, my songs can be heard on various networks, including NBC, ABC, MTV and VH-1.
So there you have it. Don’t think – just listen!
