Djing since 1997, Dr.J developed his eclectic musical taste in Vancouver. His weekly night Jazidup was a mainstay for music lovers who seeked an alternative to top40 club music and found a soundsystem fusion of funk, house, jazz, r&b, hip-hop, disco, latin, boogie, techno and afrobeat. He has shared turntables and rocked dancefloors there and abroad with King Britt, Bugz In The Attic, ?uestlove, DJ Heather, Mark Farina, Zero7, Dego from 4Hero. Matthew Herbert, Jazzanova and countless others. In 2002, he helped to create SunTzu Sound - a westcoast collective of four other deejays and musicians, best known for being torchbearers of the rising brokenbeat scene - and shifted focus from his DJ schedule to his studio retreat.
With the aid of some of Vancouver's finest musicians and singers, Dr.J transformed the Jazidup sound into the live 8-piece cosmic soulestra 1LUV and became its music director/producer. In 2006, 1LUV released singles on SuntzuSound, Yoruba and Especial Records. These created quite a stir in the worldwide underground music scene and made the charts of heavyweight DJs Osunlade (Yoruba), Phil Asher (Restless Soul), Benji B (BBC 1xtra), Michael Rutten (Compost) and Karl Injex (Rude Movements). All this buzz culminated in the debut album “Dr.J presents 1LUV 'NEOPHILIA'” released in September 2006 on Columbia Records in Japan and most recently made available in Europe on April 9, 2007 by Berlin based tastemakers Jazzanova on their own record label Sonar Kollektiv.
Newly relocated to Toronto in 2008, his latest studio efforts include a hi-octane funk LP with singer Amalia Townsend under the moniker CUTTY LARK on Do Right! Music plus collaborations with King Britt, Ivana Santilli and SuntzuSound.
