JERONIMO MAYA: FLAMENCO GUITARIST / COMPOSER
It is a pleasure to present the flamenco guitarist JERONIMO, considered by many to be the most outstanding of the new generation. His enormous creativity and impeccable technique allow him to create music which goes beyond traditional flamenco, never forgetting the strength of his flamenco foundations, which is accessible to a broad public no matter where they come from. Jeronimo Maya, JERONIMO, was born in 1977 in Madrid, Spain, into a gipsy family with deep flamenco roots. He's a direct descendent of flamenco guitar legend Ramon Montoya. His father Felipe Maya, a professional guitarist, and his great-uncle Ricardo Losada el Yunque, a well-known cantaor, taught him to live, breathe and learn respect for flamenco. He began playing guitar when he was four years old, and at the age of seven he gave his first concert in Madrid, as part of the Cumbre Flamenca the so-called flamenco summit, sadly long-forgotten. Right from the start he stood out from other young flamenco hopefuls, studying music at the Madrid Conservatory of Music, whilst at the same time he trained at home with his father and in family circles. However, he took great care not to fall into the trap of being sold as a child prodigy, giving only a few carefully-selected public appearances. He performed, with resounding success, at the Festival Bienal de Flamenco of Seville and during Madrid's Veranos de la Villa season. From a very early age it became clear that Jeronimo was a gifted creator, composing some of his own material. In 1989 he prepared a tribute to Sabicas, with whom Jeronimo had forged a solid relationship on his visits to the legendary figure in Madrid, and was invited to perform together with Paco de Lucia and Enrique Morente at the Carnegie Hall in New York. When his mentor died in 1990, Jeronimo performed in a tribute at the Festival de Olite, sharing a stage with Manolo Sanlucar. He also shared the limelight with Camaron de la Isla at the Plaza de Toros de Malaga. Soon he was touring the international circuit with his own company, visiting Japan, Canada, Holland, Italy, France, Jordan... He gave outstanding concerts at Madrid venues such as Maria Guerrero and the Monumental, as well as at the Gran Teatro in Cordoba. In May 1999 he was awarded the Copa Teatro Pavon for young artists at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid. In 2001 he offered a concert at the IX Festival de Flamenco Caja Madrid, and he took part in the show 'De mis soledades vengo: los clasicos y el flamenco', together with Jose Menese, Ginesa Ortega, Enrique de Melchor and Joan Albert Amargos at the Spanish Royal theatre, Teatro Real de Madrid. In 2003, he offered important recitals at Queen Elizabeth Hall in London and Concertgebouw in Amsterdam. In 2004, after the concerts at The Arts House, Plenary Hall in Singapore, in May he presented his solo debut album, 'Jeronimo' (The Best Recording Solo Guitar Revelation 2004 of Flamenco Hoy Awards sellected by flamenco specialists), and all of his performances have been acclaimed, whether in the Festival Flamenco Pa' Tos in Madrid, or the closing ceremony of the Bienal de Flamenco de Sevilla titled '1904-2004. Apart from offering solo concerts, he has also accompanied cantaores such as Diego el Cigala, Chano Lobato, Esperanza Fernandez, Estrella Morente, Jose de la Tomasa, Arcangel and his uncle El Yunque.

JERÓNIMO: GUITARRISTA FLAMENCO / COMPOSITOR
Jerónimo Maya Maya, ‘Jerónimo’, nace en Madrid en 1977 en una familia gitana de fuertes raíces flamencas. Es descendiente directo del maestro de la guitarra Ramón Montoya. Su padre Felipe Maya, guitarrista profesional, y su tío abuelo Ricardo Losada el Yunque, cantaor reconocido, le enseñan a vivir y respetar el flamenco. Comienza a tocar la guitarra a los cinco años y a los siete ofrece su primer concierto en Madrid, dentro de los actos que organiza la desaparecida Cumbre Flamenca. Desde sus inicios es un niño atípico en el flamenco ya que desde muy pequeño cursa estudios en el Conservatorio Superior de Música de Madrid a la vez que aprende con su padre y en su entorno familiar. Sin embargo, se cuida mucho de ser presentado como niño prodigio ofreciendo contadas, pero muy importantes, apariciones en público. Se presenta, cosechando sonoros triunfos, en la Bienal de Sevilla y en los Veranos de la Villa de Madrid. Jerónimo demuestra muy pronto que es un artista dotado para la creación componiendo sus propias interpretaciones. En 1989 se prepara un homenaje a Sabicas, con el que Jerónimo había entablado una relación muy estrecha en las visitas del maestro a Madrid, y es invitado a actuar junto a Paco de Lucía y Enrique Morente en el Carnegie Hall de Nueva York. Muerto el maestro en 1990, Jerónimo actúa en un homenaje en el Festival de Olite compartiendo cartel con Manolo Sanlúcar. También comparte cartel con Camarón de la Isla en la Plaza de Toros de Málaga. Pronto comienzan sus giras internacionales con su propia compañía por Japón, Canadá, Holanda, Italia, Francia, Jordania, etc. Destacan sus conciertos en Madrid (Teatro María Guerrero y Monumental) o Córdoba (Gran Teatro). En mayo de 1999 recibe la Copa Teatro Pavón para jóvenes artistas en el Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid. En el 2001 ofrece un concierto de guitarra en el Festival de Flamenco Caja Madrid y participa en el espectáculo 'De mis soledades vengo: los clásicos y el flamenco', junto a José Menese, Ginesa Ortega, Enrique de Melchor y Joan Albert Amargós, con el que actúa en el Teatro Real de Madrid. En 2003, ofrece unos recitales importantes en el Queen Elizabeth Hall de Londres o el Concertgebouw de Amsterdam. En mayo de 2004, tras sus conciertos en The Art House Plenary Hall de Singapur, presenta su primer disco en solitario, 'Jerónimo' (Mejor Disco de Guitarra Solista Revelación 2004 en los premios 'Flamenco Hoy' de la crítica flamenca). Todas sus presentaciones se han contado por éxitos sea en el Festival Flamenco P'a Tos en Madrid o en el espectáculo de Clausura '1904-2004. Lo que el tiempo da, lo que el tiempo quita, lo que el tiempo pone' dirigido por José Luis Ortiz Nuevo en la Bienal de Sevilla. Tanto crítica como público han quedado boquiabiertos tras sus conciertos en ciclos como el Festival Flamenco por Tarantos de Madrid, el Festival Flamenco de Ciutat Vella de Barcelona, el Festival Internacional del Cante de las Minas de La Unión (Murcia), Tampere Flamenco Week de Finlandia en el año 2005. El Festival de Jerez, el Festival Flamenco Internacional de Mayrin de Ginebra, el Festival Internacional de Guitarra de Murcia, el Festival Flamenco Joven de Madrid o el Festival de Guitarra de Córdoba destacan entre sus citas de 2006. Además de sus recitales en solitario, ha acompañado a numerosos cantaores: Diego el Cigala, Chano Lobato, Esperanza Fernández, Estrella Morente, José de la Tomasa, Arcángel o Ricardo Losada el Yunque. Ha participado en grabaciones de Ricardo Losada el Yunque, 'Sabiduría y Duende' (Muxxic Records - Palo Nuevo 2001); Ginesa Ortega, 'Por los espejos del agua' (Picap 2002); Paco del Pozo, 'Vestido de Luces' (harmonia mundi iberica 2003), en el que compartía la producción musical con Jorge Pardo; o Manzanita ‘La Cucharita’ (Sum Records 2004). En mayo 2004, Jerónimo presenta su álbum de debut, 'Jerónimo' (alma100 música 2004), uno de los discos más esperados en el mundo del flamenco, en el que, además de la composición de los temas, también ejerce las labores de producción. En enero de 2005, el disco ha sido seleccionado como Mejor Disco de Guitarra Solista Revelación 2004 en los premios ‘Flamenco Hoy’ de la crítica flamenca.

As well as presenting the flamenco guitar concerts with his group, Jeronimo forms a special guitar duo with his brother Leo de Aurora, 'JERONIMO + LEO DE AURORA', with a unique new sound imbued with the music of the Romani musician Django Reinhardt, the genius jazz guitarist from Belgium-France.
In 2007, the duo will present its 1st album "A lo Gitano Jazz (Jazz Gipsy style)". This ‘gipsy swing jazz-flamenco’ is their musical passion to the outside of the flamenco world, having the essence of their race, way of life in common.
This emotive combination, 'Manouche' jazz and the force of flamenco, could be enjoyed in the homage to the maestro 'Ray Chango' on the 'Jerónimo’ disc. The new album develops that swing, revealing an exciting individual world.
The intention with this album is to create and enjoy the moment of two guitarists with different personalities switching their roles at any time. No one has fixed role like one is main guitarist and the other is for rhythm. When one plays solo, the other plays rhythm, or vice versa, to take advantage of each other’s talent, to create together and to reach to the music beyond of our imagination.
To do this, we need high level of the musical talent, creativity and courage to go forward without fear. The duo Jeronimo + Leo de Aurora is the perfect pair for this magical experience, and in flamenco, only can truly reach to that level.
The album also includes songs dedicated to another 3 masters; Charles Mingus, Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles.
