Dear friend, it's been said that humans only use 5% of their brain. The other 95% is uncharted territory. To make use of this hidden treasure of the mind we must learn to be still. This means going back to the old way where meditation was a part of daily life. We must learn to follow our instincts which are truly the uncharted territory of our mind. The universe has given us this remarkable computer that we call the mind, it truly is our choice of whether we develop it or let it grow stagnant. If we choose to develop it we must also choose whether we use it for love or hate. If we choose wisely and let peace and love be our path the universe will truly open for us. When this happens it will give us great gifts and peace from within. So mat this day you set quietly and empty yourself of all thoughts of sadness and anger. As this happens may love and peace fill your soul allowing you to explore the uncharted territory within.
Dear friend, so many of us practice the martial arts to learn control and serenity. If practiced in the traditional way the martial arts can be a gateway to peace. Because in the traditional way we do not study how to harm others, we study how to control and prevent aggression. We placed more emphasis on how to block and evade than we do on striking or throwing. The old way is truly about the development of Mind, Body, and Spirit to be used in such a way to create a peaceful life and world. If you translate the Japanese word samurai you will find the meeting is “those who serve”. The idea behind this is there is no higher purpose than service to others. So we must realize that our greatest calling is helping others. By doing this we will truly be on the road to peace and happiness. So try this little experiment as you go through your day take just a moment or two, to help someone in need. Not only is this our calling as humans but it will also give us the direction on our road to peace. So please extend a helping hand where you can and may you receive the blessings the universe so freely gives when we follow our purpose.
Dear Friend, as humans we must constantly remind ourselves that we truly will never find peace if our actions are negative and destructive. The world is truly how we make it or how we see it. If we look at the world through fearful eyes we will react with force and negativity. But if we can see through the fear that truly blinds our vision like a fog we will see a world that is full of many beautiful things. Negativity and fear is a strong emotion that very easily can take control of our lives. But with much work we can learn to feel the positive energy that is truly abundant in our existence and our universe. Begin this day by taking a walk and as you do keep your head held high. Focus on the beauty of the clouds. With each step take a moment to notice the beauty that is so abundant and waiting for us to discover. You will begin to feel the positive energy that is all around us. Remember this energy is always here, it is just as humans we need to open up to receive this great gift. And somewhere in this walk just take a moment to sincerely say thank you to the universe for all of its beautiful and limitless gifts. The universe truly will give us everything we need. We just need to be sincere, pure, and truly grateful.
So peace and blessings to you dear friend, may beauty and positive energy fill every moment of your life.
This week comment is a beautiful old Chinese proverb. This proverb teaches the secret to true happiness. And it goes like this! “If you want happiness for an hour, take a nap. If you want happiness for a day, go fishing. If you want happiness for a year, inherit a fortune. If you want happiness for a lifetime, help somebody.” This proverb is so simple and beautiful. Because it teaches us not to strive for short-term happiness, it teaches us how to be happy every moment of our life. The Western equivalent to this proverb would be “it is better to give than to receive”. And how true that is! Because ask any parent or teacher who shapes a child's life where their happiness comes from! So today try a little experiment go out into the world and very carefully do one random simple act of kindness. Once this is done setback for a moment and feel the gift of joy and happiness that the universe lays at your feet. Helping others and doing acts of kindness very simply is the secret to happiness! So peace and light to you my dear friend. Remember to take the time to invest in your happiness and help the world to be a better place. Your friend Ray of the Island
I have been very fortunate this week to have the opportunity to meditate on the joy of hardships. I have come to the conclusion that our setbacks and periods of great hardship create the opportunity for us to polish our spirits. As humans we need to always remember that our times of hardships truly are our blessings. Think of it this way, so many times in the martial arts we endure great pain and hardship in our training. We know in time this process will create a very strong and agile body. Using this same philosophy we should look at our daily life in the same way. So when we feel many things are against us, we should take a moment and smile. Because these little tests that the universe gives us will truly polish and purify our spirit. We cannot control what hardships that life gives us, but what we can do is control how we react and deal with such hardships. Learning to be content and thankful for hardships can seem to be a great chore, but remember this training will open the door to true joy and happiness. This is because one of the secrets to happiness is having the discipline to relax and feel the joy of this very moment. If we can do this in hard times the easy times will naturally take care of themselves. To quote Socrates “He is rich who is content with the least; for contentment is the wealth of nature.”
So my dear friend, may you be blessed with the strength and courage to receive every gift from the universe with a smile!
You know conflict and turmoil is a normal part of daily life. This has been the way since the beginning of time. The key is not to succumb to it, but in the midst of it find a place to practice peace and tranquility. It is much like being in the eye of a hurricane or a tornado. Because in the eye of the storm the weather is very calm, it is just the outer circle of the storm that contains the violent force. Knowing this as we encounter the conflict and turmoil of our daily life we place ourselves in the center of the storm where we can observe and accomplish our goals in safety without becoming violent or out of control. Just as the storm in nature will move and change directions so will the conflict and turmoil move and change directions in our daily lives. The key is to sense the moving and direction of the storm, and smoothly move with it staying in its center. This takes sensitivity, patience, tolerance, and practice. Please know that I am not a master of this by any means, but I know it is there and sometimes I am blessed enough to find myself safely in the eye of the storm. So my friend good luck with this and may you always find your safe haven in the eye of the storm.
Peace to you and may you have every blessing the universe can give!
One can learn much about the philosophy of Yin and Yang from Surfing. When surfing you have two types of currents, Positive/Negative. Positive will push you into shore and Negative will take you out to sea. To ride a wave you need to find the Positive current. The problem is as you are trying to get out to sea the positive current keeps pushing you into shore. This is where the negative current is useful. You find the current that is pulling out to sea and you move with it until it gets you to the point where the large waves are breaking. And then you paddle to the side across the Negative current until you find the positive current going in, so you can find and catch your large positive wave. This is tricky because if you fight against the negative current that is taking you out to sea the force of the ocean will exhaust you and eventually take you out anyway. And if the negative force is taking you out, you must be careful to paddle across to the positive current at just the right time to find your positive wave. I think this teaches us that when we are confronted with adversity to not fight it, but to move with it and blend with it, until we can find a point where we can safely move to the side and find a positive wave/force. This is why the old styles of the martial arts are always defensive, they always begins with a deflection or block. So in life I think it is very important to learn to deal with negative things gracefully, so that we can use this adversity to move across the current and find our positive Wave, Home. Peace to you my Friend.
Just stopping by to make my weekly visit and wish you health and happiness! A new thing that the island has taught me this week is “making lemonade out of lemons”. What I mean by that is if something we do not like happens in our life and changes are routine. Be sure and look around because I'm sure you will discover at least two or three beautiful opportunities that have occurred from what seemed to be misfortune. It is very interesting! So if you can try this little experiment. When things go wrong make yourself do a deep belly laugh. The reason you are laughing is not because of your misfortune. It is because you know that at least three good things very soon will present themselves. That is if we keep positive and open our eyes to all the gifts that are being given to us. We have to remember that the universe can give us a gift but to receive the gift we must open our eyes and except it.
Peace to you
And incidentally your friendship is one of my gifts from the universe.
We train Ki/Chi by our thoughts and actions. There are two types of Ki/Chi. They are called “original” and “true”. “Original” is coarse and heavy and “true” is light and versatile. We can see an example of this when we view a person who is highly competitive and driven who has lost track of their purity and goodness compared to a person who no matter what difficulties they may encounter they stay kind and positive. A few the of the people we can see throughout history is Dr. Martin Luther King, Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, O Sensei Morihei Ueshiba, O Sensei Dr. Jigoro Kano, O Sensei Chojun Miyagi, and the Dalai Lama. All of these people tapped into “True” Ki/Chi. As humans I believe we truly must strive to bring peace to the world. Sometimes this may mean we have to go to battle but we do it is with control and compassion. As for an example of people with “original” Ki/Chi, well I believe it is best we do not dwell on negative energy. It is best to wish these people good things from afar and be aware that the negative energy that is gripping them may try and attack us. If they do attack us we will deal with them with control and compassion. Thus developing our “true” Ki/Chi. Just like I run, swim, lift weights, and train in the martial arts on a regular basis, I also try and develop my “true Ki/Chi. And my friend you are part of this process. Because every week I take a little time to think positive thoughts about all my friends. And hopefully week by week this training will help my “true” Ki/Chi become stronger.
