He started playing drums at the age of 12 and began his formal education at the Hot Clube de Portugal Jazz School in Lisbon. In 2001 he moved to The Netherlands where he got a Bachelor Degree in jazz-percussion in 2006 and met a lot of musicians with which he still colaborates. While studying at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague he won a couple of contests (Pim Jacobs Prijs and Dutch Jazz Competition) with the As Guests Quartet and played in some of the most important venues in Holland such as Bimhuis, North Sea Jazz Festival, Paradiso and Melkweg.
In 2002 he participated at the Siena Jazz International Seminar where he met Enrico Rava with whose bands he later colaborated. In that occasion he also met Giovanni Guidi with which he later recorded three albums for Cam Jazz and played in the main jazz venues in Italy (Umbria Jazz 06 and 08, Villa Cellimontana, Casa del Jazz, etc) aswell as in festivals abroad such as North Sea Jazz Festival and MIDEM.
In Portugal he has also played with both upcoming and established musicians such as Mário Laginha, Bernardo Sassetti, André Fernandes, Norberto Lobo, Júlio Resende. He’s part of Carlos Bica’s “Matéria Prima” alongside with the reknown musicians João Paulo and Mário Delgado. In his homeland he played the most important venues (Casa da Música, CCB, Culturgest, Hot Clube de Portugal).
He also colaborated with the avant-garde guitarist Scott Fields in Germany recording two albums, one for Clean Feed and NEOS. He is also active performing with contemporary dancers having been part of the Danish dance/music project WEGO for 4 years with which he did three productions performing all over Denmark, Holland and Spain and by being a member of the Unfinishd Company, a colective of dancers and musicians focused on improvisation.
Despite his short career, João Lobo has already performed with some big names of the European and American jazz scene such as Roswell Rudd, Gianluca Petrella, Julian Arguelles, Nelson Veras, John Hebert and Michael Attias.
In 2008 he recorded the first album of the impro quartet he co-leads – Tetterapadequ – and in 2009 with the trio he co-leads, Norman. He has very active colaborations with fellow musicians such as Giovanni Di Domenico, Lynn Cassiers, Manolo Cabras, Norberto Lobo both in Brussels and Lisbon, the two cities where he is based._______________________________________
