| About The Joel Plaskett Emergency |
|
Joel Plaskett and his band, The Emergency (Tim Brennan on Bass and Dave Marsh on drums) manage to distill their encyclopedic influences - influences as disparate as Led Zeppelin, Steve Mariott-era Small Faces, Curtis Mayfield and Vic Chestnutt - into heart-felt, intelligent, original music that'll remind you why you got hooked on the stuff in the first place.
From riff-happy rockers like "The Red Light", "Extraordinary" and "Lights Down Low" to the aching ballads Until You Came Along and The Day You Walked Away, Plaskett shows all the signs of a major songwriting talent coming into his own - something long-time fans have seen coming from the get-go.
For those of you coming to this artist later in the game… Joel Plaskett has been playing in bands and making records longer than most of his peers have been shaving. Ten years with Halifax's Thrush Hermit gave Joel ample opportunity to hone his chops and tour extensively in North America while still young enough to enjoy the simple thrill of it. The Hermit's swan song, Clayton Park, was the most played CD on Canadian campus radio in 1999 and videos From The Back of the Film and The Day We Hit the Coast from that disc both got serious attention at MuchMusic.
Joel's first solo effort, In Need of Medical Attention, drew critical acclaim on several continents and the follow-up, Down at the Khyber (again produced by Joel and McGettigan) made virtually every critic's top ten list, spawned three videos - "Maybe We Should Just Go Home", "Clueless Wonder" and "True Patriot Love" - and also garnered Joel several ECMA nominations on his home turf as well as a Juno nomination for Best New Artist.
If you've got a heart and if you've got a stake in the future of rock'n'roll, then you'll recognize that Joel Plaskett is the real deal. He's already proven he's no flash in the pan, now he's proving that he's the newest Canadian international star for the ages.
