JOEY B.BANKS
Drummer,Producer,Promoter,Teacher.
I started playing drums when I was six years old on my first drum set. I don’t remember not ever playing drums.
A big part of my early development as a drummer was from marching in drum corps. I marched from 1975-1979 with the Madison jr. Scouts and snare drum from 1980-86 with the Madison Scouts. In 1986 I went to the Musicians Institute of technology in Los Angeles In 1988 I entered the Air Force and did not play in a band for over 3 years.
In 1991 I started playing with James Earl Tate and the million-dollar blues band. Through Tate I met Luther Allison. I would perform with him a few years later. Over a four-year period I would be fortunate to share the stage with Luther Allison, Koko Taylor, Jimmy Johnson and became band mates to local, legendary electric/acoustic guitarist Jim Schwall of the legendary, Siegel/Schwall band. I also started playing with Madison’s award winning jazz vocalist Jan Wheaton in 1995.
In 1996 is also when I formed my own band, Black N’ Blues, now the Black N’ Blues All-stars. The BNB All-stars is currently an all-star ..10-piece rhythm and blues band with some of the best jazz, blues, and funk artist living in the Madison/Milwaukee Wisconsin area. Rotating members of the group have included jazz saxophonist and composer, Roscoe Mitchell, producer, organist Ben Sidran, and the original funky drummer Clyde Stubblefield. The band is currently performing at clubs and private functions around Madison and surrounding area.
In 1998 I became a member of the local rock band, Honor Among Thieves, and recorded "The Blue God" with Andy Ewen, Doug Derosa, and Randall Harrison, in 2000. The band was the subject of a short film that was shown at the Wisconsin Film festival in 2004, "When the world runs fast." The "rockumentary"
aired on Wisconsin Public Television in the summer of 2007.
Groups I am currently performing with are, Honor Among Thieves (original rock), Jim Schwall Band (original blues rock), Black N’ Blues All Stars (blues, funk, and soul) Tony Brown and the 608 Riddem section (Carribean, Reggae, Funk), AJ Love Blues Band (Traditional Blues), and the Charles Walker Band (Blues), and Bobby Messano (Blues Rock). I play every Tuesday at the Frequency in the house band for the "Chicago Blues Tuesdays" which showcases some of the best blues artist out of Chicago like John Primer, Lindsey Alexander, Billy Branch, Tom Holland, Barrellhouse Chuck, and Pistol Pete to name a few. On ocassion I sub for the "funky drummer" and living funk legend Clyde Stubblefield and host his "Funky Monday's" show at the Frequency
In January 2004 I launched JBENT Productions. Where have been doing some music production for hip hop artist in the area and some music production for radio, TV and Video. I am currently teaching music programs at the local Boys and Girls club on Madison west side where I teach the D.RU.M. program, Black Star Drum Line, Music Makers and Music Appreciation to over 200 kids. I also teach privately at Madison Music Foundry where I currently have 20 drum students.
