Born in Detroit, Michigan, Joey has
been on the music scene since he picked
up a guitar at age 8. He has grown up
surrounded by local Detroit musicians such
a Val Ventro and The Motor City V8's,
James Cloyd, Donnie Hartman (The Frost),
Dave Gilbert (The Rockets), Johnny B Gayden,
and many others.
By gaining valuable stage experience while
playing gigs across Michigan with his father
"Cousin Joe", Joey has learned how to outperform
in both a solo and full band atmosphere.
When His father passed away May, 28th 2005,
Joey began to play shows mainly in the North
Eastern part of Michigan while working on his
debut album “Stuck... Behind A Bus”.
Joey is currently living in the Metro
Detroit area working on his EP entitled "SEXTACY"
and working shows In The Metro Detroit Area.
One Weekend a month He can generally be found
around the Alpena area playing either solo or
with his (Northern) band "Joey Spina and
The Gun Club". His Band Downstate is generally
referred to as simply Joey Spina.
Joey’s debut album "Stuck...Behind a Bus"
is based off of the track "Wait" which describes
the feeling of frustration we’ve all experienced:
Wanting something so much, but not being able to
move towards it until we wait for whatever it is
that’s holding us up. As Joey states so simply yet elegantly, it’s like "When you’re stuck behind a bus
Letting the kids to get off, all you can do is
just wait."
Another song of the album titled “Remember
When” details an experience of Joey’s when he
was a child and how he always meant to say some
words to his father. “I never forgave that day.
You shut the door, when, I had something to say.
I never said how much it hurt to watch you
drive away.”
His bluesy track entitled “Friend” is almost
a letter to a girl whom has obviously said that
another man was “just a friend.” We’ve felt this
before, and Joey says just what he thinks when
he writes, “And did you let them find what was
yours and mine, to take it all away. It’s just
a friend. And they will come to you, with their
things to do, baby they’ll take up your time,
it’s just your friend.”
For his upcoming EP “Sextacy”, Joey’s sound
has evolved into a Marvin Gaye/Prince styled
dance mix. Although it also includes some tracks
with his melodic acoustic rock sound from
“Stuck… Behind a Bus”, It is over all a new
and unique sound wearing classic soul shoes.
