John Courage plays all guitars heard on these recordings. The new record features Bill Palmer and Ephriam Nagler exclusively as my brand new rock band (what a combo!). In Santa Fe, I have joined forces with Bill Palmer, Arne Bey, Dave Waldrop, Night Train, Naiz Denae, Case Tanner, Felicia Ford, Jim Palmer, Justin Lindsey, Joe West, Margaret Burke, Lydia Clark, Sharon Gilchrist, Susan Hyde Holmes and when he let's me, Xoe Fitzgerald. In Santa Rosa, I play with Brian Fitzpatrick (ex-Cropduster, First Novels) and Henry Nagle (Emily Jane White, The Spindles, Corrine West, Wiseacre). I have also been priveleged to have been supported by the following unknown and extremely talented musicians: Muir Houghton, Ephriam Nagler, Leila Anne Brusseau, Jess Schaeffer, Emily White, J.D. Limelight, Ross Harris, Paul Hoffman, Oona Riesling Sholl, Benjamin Blake, Odessa Jorgensen, Nick Nesbitt, Ashley Mauerhan, Michael Bean, Gone Fishin', The Reluctant Poet, Watermouth, and last but not least: Goose and Turtle.
Influences
Santa Rosa, CA, New Mexico, crazy bums, paranoia, love, fights, vices, muses, and other day to day things that seem to slip through the cracks..
Musically: Led Zeppelin, Mississippi John Hurt, Brian Fitzpatrick, Henry Nagle, Tom Petty, Mark Gauche, The Band, Burrito Bros., Guy Clark, Steve Earle, Townes, Steve Young.
Sounds Like
Classic got into a fight with soft rock, and they ran away on a never ending roadtrip.
John Courage resides in New Mexico for the moment, but over the course of his short life, he has lived throughout the western United States. With a love for old folk recordings, obscure pop refrences and a group of talented friends, John Courage's latest release was a limited edition of his album, "Murder of Crows". The instrumentation includes concert harp, accordian, upright bass, violin, cello, musical saw and odd ended percussion, and vocal stylings go from operatic to ghostly. Currently preparing for a new album with no working title, he has re-buffed his songwriting muscle to pull some heartstrings, make the people shake their collective ass and get out and do something.
In the past he has opened for a vast array acts including Ramblin' Jack Elliot, Commander Cody and His Lost Planet Airmen, The Devil Makes Three, The Shiftless Rounders, and indie darlings The Velvet Teen. Often finding himself and his various backing bands on stage with punk, metal, or hip hop acts, he has learned to adapt like a chameleon without losing the ability to retain that certain "John Courage" sound. Wether he's producing a recording, sitting in, or leading the band, you're sure to know when there's a little bit of that over sized leprechaun infecting the groove.
Sometimes he shows up alone, other times he has a rag tag band, but either way you are promised a spectacle.
"If there were any justice in the world, John Courage would be out on tour with Neil Young and [his] new album 'Murder of Crows' would be added to every playlist across the country. It's that good." - Gabe Meline in 'The North Bay Bohemian' Vol 29.08
