MIXER - PRODUCER - PROTOOLS .. What do Ray Charles, Michael Jackson, David Bowie, Gladys Knight, Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin and The Bee Gees all have in common beside their legendary status and being Rock n’ Roll Hall of Fame inductees?.. How about renowned songstresses Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, Madonna, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Tony Braxton, Kelly Rowland, Chrisette Michelle, Paula Abdul, Mary J. Blige, Brandy, Kimberly Locke and Joss Stone -or celebrated voices such as Babyface (Grammy™ Nom), Barry White, Phil Collins, John Mellencamp, Usher, Tony Rich, and Lionel Richie...what do they all have in common?.. What about famous groups like Earth, Wind and Fire, TLC (Grammy™ Nom), Destiny’s Child, N’Sync, The Backstreet Boys, and Take 6 to name a few?.. They all have in common a man with his own legendary status; a man who has numerous awards and Grammy™ nominations and is credited with over eighty Top 20 hits, one hundred Top Forty hits (at one period he had 20 songs in the Top 40) as well as over one hundred Gold Albums and Platinum Albums: a man named Jon Gass... As a Mix Producer, Jon Gass creates a lush aural landscape that helps to define the artist and their musical style. When we listen, we are taken on a journey where the groove grabs hold of you and won’t let go while every nuance and hook is present and accounted for. You just don’t hear a Jon Gass mix; you feel it deep in your soul as it reaches all of your senses and transports you into the song itself... Jon started out in life wanting to be a pilot…a career that was ruined by receiving his first guitar and amp for his tenth birthday. He never looked back and within the year he joined his older brother’s group. They toured and played together for nearly four years. Then in high school he and some friends formed One Way Alley, a group that received high critical praise and toured the West Coast for over a year. It was this group that inadvertently started the producing and mixing career of Jon Gass. Wanting to record an album and unable to afford it, they started recording on their own using three cassette decks. They discovered that Jon could make them sound better than the professional studios. Then he got a Teac 3340 - his first pro gear and history was set in motion. .. However, he wasn’t done performing, and joined yet another band that made the move to L.A. when they had a label offer. In addition to playing guitar and bass on the band’s recordings, his natural ability as a producer and mixer were already known and he played those roles as well. It was this multi-tasking that led him to a crossroad and in the end he accepted an offer from a large well-known Hollywood studio. Here he stayed for several years before forming Jon Gass Productions, an independent studio that offers Mixing and Production, as well as Mastering. Recently Jon Gass Productions went Global and now offers all of their services via secure communications over the internet utilizing iDisk, delivering your mix or production to your system anywhere in the world. This of course is not a surprising move from one of the first users of Pro-Tools who is now one its foremost experts... In addition to mixing the top artists and best up and coming talent around, Jon Gass is currently working on a series of videos that will share some of his tips for mixing that will be available on his website jongass.com as well as on MySpace and YouTube... "Mixing, to me, is so much more creative than recording. You're actually doing the creating, as opposed to waiting for the artist to show up. In fact, I don't think you even know how to track music until you've done quite a bit of mixing. For me, the main objective is to keep the lead vocal natural and crystal clear without destroying the band. A lot of mixers just seem to head for the 'telephone' lead vocal sound, and sure, that makes the job really quick, but it won't fly with some of the high-caliber singers I work with. Try that with Whitney or Madonna and it's going to be, 'Have a nice day. See ya!' I therefore start a lot of mixes with the vocal. If it doesn't already sound pretty natural I'll try to correct that, and then I'll bring the instruments in around it. A lot of other people will work on a mix for hours and not even listen to the lead vocal, and that amazes me: sooner or later it's got to be there, so you might as well get used to it." Jon Gass – quote from Mix Master magazine article. ............ ...... ..

Jon Gass’ credit list reads like a Who’s Who of musical greats…and with good reason. Gass’ unsurpassed style and technique has elevated him to a most esteemed position among engineers working with the best of the best on some of the most creative and demanding music around today. – The Mixing Engineers Handbook .. Gass has forged a considerable reputation on the basis of behind-the-board heroics that fly in the face of straightforward balancing or dabbling with effects. For him, mixing is the most important part of the record-making process, and he therefore warrants more than the mention that producers or engineers often get. – Mix Master Magazine .. "Come Together Now," originally inspired by the tsunami tragedy, is the first major all-star collaboration for charity since "We Are The World," which was released more than 20 years ago. The lyrics convey a universal theme that promotes unity in times of adversity and encourages people to reach out with compassion and understanding. This inspirational song blends R&B, Rap, Pop & A/C with a soulful melody. Many of today's most successful international recording artists generously donated their vocals for the charity single by recording their individual parts of the song over the past few weeks. Celebrities participating in the collaboration include: Celine Dion, Natalie Cole, Nick Carter, Joss Stone, Jesse McCartney, Patti LaBelle, Wyclef Jean, Chingy, Gavin DeGraw, Anthony Hamilton, The Game, JoJo, John Legend, Kimberley Locke, Brian McKnight, AJ McLean, Mya, Aaron Carter, Stacie Orrico, Kelly Price, Lee Ryan, Angie Stone, Garu, Glenn Lewis, Tren'l, R.L. Huggar, and Ruben Stoddard. The mixing of the song involved more than one hundred and sixty separate tracks, which included never before utilized technologies and was mixed by legendary engineer Jon Gass. - Rollingstone.com .. It's a roster of the “golden-eared” that includes George Massenburg, Garth Brooks, Shawn Murphy, Babyface, Jon Gass, John Mellencamp, Barbra Streisand, Celine Dion, Amy Grant and Linda Ronstadt, among many others. – Stephen Paul review, Mix Magazine .. TAKE 6 IN TOKYO MORE THAN MEETS THE EAR By now, Take 6 is recognized as one of the top a cappella groups in the world, thrilling audiences with their always uplifting blend of soul, gospel and jazz. For their first live album, recorded over three nights at the Blue Note club in Tokyo, they enlisted engineer Jon Gass, who had worked on a few earlier studio recordings with the group, to capture the magic in concert. - Mix Masters Well, the BEST OF THE BEST! The songs, the message, the recording, Take 6 win again with this wonderful album. - Amazon.com .. Rowland handpicked the best of the remixes by Jon Gass and the re-release is Rowland's best one yet by miles, a satisfying, well-planned record consisting of the best of the funky Kelly and the dramatic Kelly, who've come together here to prove why this Child's destiny is to be a superstar. This album is an incredible showing of taste, talent, and charisma at every speed, and is one of the strongest mainstream R&B releases in many years. - AMG .. As unassuming as it is, "Mr. Radio," one of several productions from apparent newcomer Mo Jaz and mixed by Jon Gass, is the album's key standout. Chrisette Michele's leisurely dismissal of the love songs she's tolerating is far more seductive than her targets, and the performance is so unforced that it might just be the way she talks. Serious skills. – Andy Kellman .. This is a record that rides on its sound, whether it's coming from Fantasia or from the team producers, including Missy Elliot and renowned mixer Jon Gass who always present her at her best. This is enough to make Fantasia better as an album and statement of purpose than Free Yourself. It has strong tracks like "Uneligible" with its fuzz-toned instrumental breaks and skeletal beats - the track sounds pretty great and has memorable production. Fantasia does its job: and fully breaks Barrino free of her American Idol persona, giving her a sound and style that she can build a career upon. – Stephen Thomas Erlewine .. The Other Side Of Cool (Babyface) includes such great highlights as remixes by Babyface, Roland Clark, Sean “Puffy” Combs, Jon Gass, Tim Laws, L.A. Reid, and Timbaland like the "Chicago House Club Vocal Mix" of "This Is for the Cool in You," "Every Time I Close My Eyes," and the "Scratch Mix" of "My Kinda Girl" (making you wish the new jack swing era never ended). – Music Reviewer ..
