"The music of EXPERIENCES OF TODAY shows that Jose Valente has the potential to be an important force in jazz, both as a composer-arranger and as a viola soloist. It is a strong start to his career."
Scott Yanow, Author of ten jazz books including The Jazz Singers, Trumpet Kings, Bebop, Jazz On Film and Jazz On Record 1917-76"

The European/New York based band EXPERIENCES OF TODAY is the result of an exiting musical adventure, played by musicians who grew, musically and personally, in the 20th century, but want to give a sincere contribution to the evolution of improvised music in the 21st century.
The philosophy behind the group consists in the effective interpretation of diverse feelings and thoughts that the musicians need to express about today’s society.
Considering the different artistic and cultural backgrounds from the members in the EXPERIENCES, the result of this active effort is a mixture of styles and musical genres: from traditional Portuguese folk music, to flamenco, avant garde improvisation, chamber jazz, classical music, etc…
The first formation of this group (a conventional jazz quintet with viola) gathers influences from Spain, Portugal, Austria, Turkey, Ukraine and U.S.A.
Through its interventional side, this ensemble is deeply concern on constantly achieving new musical experiences and languages. There for, the original music reveals a fresh sound that approaches a wide range of compositional techniques, or a variety of unusual groupings: Jazz Sextet/Quintet/Quartet/Trio with Viola; String Trio and Voice; Saxophone duo with Viola and Bass etc…

The live performances of EXPERIENCES OF TODAY show the main intention of the band in revealing their ideologies and emotions through an intense exchange of ideas, a continuous communication that leads to the profund messages the group wants to share with the audience. EXPERIENCES OF TODAY is a constant experiment.

Sounds Like"Faixa (Portuguese for Strip), was composed by José Valente after reading about the most recent events in the Gaza Strip. Alghtough the compositional process was inspired in this particular tragedy it represents a metaphor to other moments in history where inocent people suffered imensly because of political or religious disagreements.
Faixa is composed by three movements: Faixa 1, Faixa 2 and Faixa 3.

'Round Midnight arrangement for strings and Voice, is a thought from Jose Valente about New York. Listening to the lyrics ("but it really gets bad round midnight"), Jose decided to search for a New York based Midnight, where single mothers catch late trains while caring their babies, where police sirens are a decoration and image of the town, where the air becomes a permanent filthy smell, result of the uncontrolled consum that happened during the day."
